Just last week, Alice0 wrote about Before The Green Moon, an endearing hybrid between slice-of-life adventure and farming sim that’s set at the base of a space elevator. It was cute and intriguing, and best of all it was coming from Turnfollow, the devs behind Little Party and Wide Ocean Big Jacket - two small, but awesome, story-centric indies. A mere week after being announced Before The Green Moon snuck past us and launched into full release. Just yesterday, in fact.
]]>Upcoming farm-o-life sim game Before The Green Moon has an interesting setting: a small community round the base of a space elevator, set in the lead-up to you leaving for the moon. Even more interesting is that it's coming from Turnfollow, an indie team best known for wonderful little story games like Little Party and Wide Ocean Big Jacket. Huh! Life sims are not my genre but I really like Turnfollow's games, so I'm in. Check out the announcement trailer below for a small taste of this sci-fi life.
]]>In February, the creators of the wonderful Little Party released Wide Ocean Big Jacket. I really liked the funny and touching tale of a couple taking their rowdy niece and her quiet friend on their first camping trip. You probably did not play it. But that's okay! It is one of the hundreds of games in Itch.io's Bundle For Racial Justice And Equality so maybe you'll play it now.
]]>My dad isn't like most dads. There are many things about him which make him unique, but perhaps none so idiosyncratic as this: the man really, really, really loves Calvin Coolidge, 30th President of the United States. I'm not sure how many children have been taken on car trips to Coolidge's homestead in rural Vermont (where, fun fact, Coolidge was sworn in as president following the death of President Harding), but I bet we'd make for a pretty odd club.
The reason I bring up my dad and Calvin Coolidge at all is that the screen saver for my dad's computer (or at least, as I last remember it) is a Calvin Coolidge quote about persistence and always has been. The words bounce back and forth on the screen: "Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence." And so, I find myself thinking a lot about Coolidge's perspective on persistence lately; that it will be the only thing to carry us through times of uncertainty and hardship. I dunno you guys, but I'm pouring one out for Calvin and my dad this week.
Here are some games about persistence.
]]>One game I keep telling people to go play is Little Party, the lovely pottering story about a mum doting on her daughter's sleepover. Developers Turnfollow this week launched their latest, Wide Ocean Big Jacket, and hey it's really nice too, okay. Play it now or suffer me going on about it. Wide Ocean Big Jacket is another familial tale, this time about a camping trip to a national park with aunt, uncle, their quick-witted tweenage niece, and her, ah, friend? It's warm, it's funny, and I really like its vignettey scenes are cut together.
]]>Luck, happenstance, pleasant coincidence and serendipity. Good fortune feels decidedly rare in 2019, what with a burning planet and all. There are days when I wake up on the right side of the bed, and my entire to-do list gets checked off -- and then some. Why does this happen on some days and not others? Who can say. Here is a collection of games I stumbled upon over the past week, by sheer chance. Some of them feature tales of success by cosmic intervention and some of them... don't.

]]>Cleaning is miraculous. It is the ultimate de-stressor for me. I have no patience for an unmade bed or dishes left in the sink. I pride myself on my cable management, I love making to-do lists, and nothing makes me more excited than an itinerary. Perhaps it's why I love inventory management and city sims! But even I can fall behind on my organisational prowess. I have so many ambitions left unfulfilled, so much productivity made illusory with every pomodoro timer and budget tracker app I download but never use.
I don't want to pretend that cleaning is somehow easy, or made easier when it's gameified. If you find the fun, then snap, the job's -- still a job. So I went looking for games that didn't simulate cleaning as much as I saw in them a theme of keeping things in order. Or maybe a bit of commentary on what is out of order.
Here are several games about cleaning to help keep your New Year's Resolutions on track.
]]>If you fancy going somewhere new today, hop on the bus in 4Ever Transit Authority [Itch page] and ride endlessly through procedurally-generated cities. Brendan pointed out the version released after 4Ever was created during the recent Slow Game Jam, and now I'm here to tell you it's properly finished after a little expansion and polish. The new version includes a map making the layout clear, auto-turn-around so you can let it run forever, updated music, and new buildings to see. Splendid.
]]>It’s almost Easter, a holiday which is all about a dead man getting out of his pit and sauntering around like there’s nothing wrong. Well, we have another ghostly tale for you this week in our round-up of free games. A first-person horror story so spine-chilling that you won’t feel comfortable while alone in your own apartment for years to come. A fear so instinctive and gripping that you will be unable to look at any living room or toilet bowl the same way again.
]]>When we were compiling our thoughts on the best apartments in games, Alice was disappointed that Little Party wouldn't make the cut. That's not because its domestic space isn't one of the best around, it's because that space is quite clearly a house rather than an apartment. And what a house it is. I played the game for half an hour and feel like I spent a long weekend there.
It figures that almost as soon as we published that feature, the team behind Little Party would release a game not just set in an apartment, but about an apartment. Packing Up the Rest of Your Stuff on the Last Day at Your Old Apartment [Itch page] is a first-person packing simulator. You collect the objects in your soon-to-be-vacated flat, place them in boxes, arrange them neatly, and then tape 'em up. Oh, and you'll probably do a bit of contemplating along the way. I know how you are.

]]>Planting seeds in a ruined home, returning each day to water them, chase off hungry birds, pluck weeds, and watch your plants grow is delightful in A Good Gardener [official site], a newly-released garden 'em up from the duo behind the lovely Little Party. When the weather's right, it's nice to sit back in a chair and simply enjoy your garden. You might almost forget it's not your garden, but one you're forced to grow as a prisoner during a fictional war.
]]>I should've told you about Little Party [official site] when I first played it in March, but I couldn't quite find the words. It's a free potterer starring a mum whose daughter is visiting with her friends for an arty all-nighter, come to your cabin in the woods for inspiration, and it's delightful. As the end-of-year plaudits approach and I'm thinking about games that've stuck in my head, well, it's never too late to tell you about this.
