It’s been eight years since Street Fighter V hit PC. As you might recall, the fighting game landed with the poise of someone shattering both kneecaps on impact, as complaints about a small roster of characters and barebones story mode - to be filled in later with DLC - were made more egregious by a number of technical issues, including bugs and online issues caused by its wobbly servers.
]]>One month after announcing Street Fighter 6, Capcom have waved goodbye to Street Fighter V with a big patch they're caling the 'Definitive Update'. It sets what I guess is the final meta, overhauling balance by tweaking characters and even giving some whole new moves. It also spruces the place up a bit with new graphical filters and music.
]]>Six years after the debut of Street Fighter V, Capcom have finally announced Street Fighter 6. It has Ryu, it has Luke, and it has a lot of sweat. And that's about all we know for now. Check out the announcement trailer below.
]]>The makers of Street Fighter and Resident Evil have reported that a ne'er-do-well got access to their computer systems this week. That's bad. Luckily for us, they say they've found no hint that the unknown baddie got into customer data. That's good. Though I'll be changing the password of any Capcom account I have, just in case. And this happening so soon after hackers reportedly leaked Watch Dogs: Legion's source code does make me wonder if a dramatic twist will follow.
]]>Yoshinori Ono, the executive producer of the Street Fighter series, has announced he's leaving Capcom after almost thirty years with the company. He plans to split this summer, and doesn't say what he's up to next. Ono has become the of public face of pavement punch-ups, hosting video presentations, visiting tournaments, and generally being popular amongst byway brawlers. He's going out in classic Ono style: with a cry of "SHORYUKEN!"
]]>Fighting game championship Evo has been cancelled this year following abuse allegations against Evo co-founder and CEO Joey "MrWizard" Cuellar. Evo are ejecting him from the company and replacing him as CEO. The makers of half the games in Evo's lineup had already pulled out of the event following the allegations, including Street Fighter gang Capcom and Mortal Kombat devs NetherRealm. Evo Online was due to run this weekend, one of the many virtual replacements for events called off due to the pandemic.
]]>Like everything else, Evo is not going ahead as usual this year. The fighting game championships will not invade a Las Vegas resort for a weekend at the end of July, with that event now cancelled and tickets getting refunded. But Evo 2020 is evolving, and will go online this summer. It surely won't be the same but, even as a casual spectator, I'm still well up for it.
]]>The human race evolved the facial expression known as the “smile” because we needed a way to silently communicate satisfaction to other members of our species. So we decided to bare our teeth at one another and squint. This stuck, and now even the characters of your favourite digital storyderby are doing it. It’s sort of disgusting, and yet… you know what, I like it. Here are the 11 best smiles in PC games.
]]>It might be only three months since Arcade Edition hit, but Street Fighter V is gearing up for another evolution. Champion Edition was announced this weekend, collecting everything ever released for Capcom's flagship fighter into one package in the game's "most robust version" yet. But it wouldn't be an update without something new. SFV's next step will be ushered in by an ancient strongman slathered in red-and-blue paint who fights in the buff and occasionally sprouts six angelic wings.
Subtle as ever, Capcom.
]]>Whoops, say Valve. Yes, we did accidentally put a Street Fighter V trailer up early on Steam this week. Yes, it did leak three new characters who’ll be joining the roster. Sorry. We’ll try not to let it happen again.
]]>It's no surprise that Capcom's support for Street Fighter V isn't over, but I am a bit shocked that its fourth season of new characters has already begun with new fighter Kage. Available now, this angry lad (his name literally translating to "Shadow") is pretty much a beefed up version of old palette-swap villain Evil Ryu. Now apparently cosplaying as a secondary character from Homestuck, or - more likely - some kind of Oni, Kage is a teleporting, air-dashing, punchier and generally meaner take on Ryu's familiar style. Give him a peek in the debut trailer and breakdown vid below.
]]>Capcom have added in-game adverts to Street Fighter V, slapping logos onto characters' costumes, loading screens, and arenas. These ads are optional, are currently only for in-game content and Capcom's own Pro Tour digital sports circuit, and do offer players a little in-game cash for having them enabled. They also look daft as all heck, covering characters in ugly and incongruous logos, and are an unwelcome intrusion in a game which still costs money to buy.
]]>During the Evo 2018 finals last night, Capcom had a little announcement to make - a surprise double character launch due for today, wrapping up Street Fighter 5's third season pass in one mighty tiger uppercut. Releasing simultaneously, we're seeing the return of fan-favourite Muay Thai monster Sagat, and the all-new and self-titled 'President Of The World' G. They're accompanied by full character trailers, plus more technical explanation videos showing exactly what they can do in the ring.
]]>"I've saved the city, saved the girl, but couldn't save... myself" - Cody Travers, mayor/prisoner
Rub some chalk on your bods, biffing fans. Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition has released its latest character, Cody, a street brawler who has gone from being a prisoner to a politician. Yeah, that old revolving door. Capcom have released a trailer for him, which briefly features a live action Cody that has 100% resemblance to the fighting game character and I won’t tolerate any of you saying otherwise.
]]>An update is coming to Street Fighter V on June 25 that will bring with it changes to the survival mode and introduce a new way to get cosmetics and consumables. The ‘Fighting Chance’ system will let you purchase fortune readings from Menat, containing random goodies. They’ll cost 500 fight money, which can be earned by playing the game.
]]>It's better to be fashionably late than a total no-show. Blanka's absence from Street Fighter V at launch was a bitter pill to swallow, but everyone's favourite weird Brazillian jungle-monster-man is back today and on form.
Rejoining the likes of Ryu and Dhalsim and a few other frenemies from the good old days of Street Fighter 2, Blanka has picked up a few new tricks and some impressive costumes on the way, including one very, very silly one..
]]>It’s the big mon himself. Blanka, the beast-like brawler who first appeared in Street Fighter II, is coming to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition next week, on February 20. He’s still got them electrics, he’s still likes to roll around and savage his opponents with his claws, and he’s still upset at the world for accidentally leaving him in the Amazon jungle for most of his formative years. But maybe that’s all about to change in his upcoming story mode. “One day,” says a post from Capcom, “a suspicious salesman approaches him and offers a way to make Blanka famous by mass producing a doll made in Blanka’s likeness.” Wanna see Blanka dressed up as that doll? I have a picture right here.
]]>While Capcom are holding true to their promise that Street Fighter V would be the one and only version of SF5 you need to buy, they can't resist their old habit of slapping on modifiers to create increasingly ludicrous names. Next week Capcom will launch Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, a big free update adding new modes to the fighting game as well as giving balance a kick up the bum. Ahead of the launch, they've whacked out the patch notes so fightfans can pop their monocles at number changes and frown at how vague some of the details are.
]]>Sometimes, fictional worlds collide because a movie executive figures there's a ton of green to be made from a bunch of superheroes frowning at each other. Sometimes, they collide because a toy designer has a brilliantly stupid idea in the shower. Ladies and germs, I give you Street Fighter x Transformers, which stars, amongst others, Optimus Prime as Ryu, Megatron as M.Bison and Hot Rod as Ken, complete with the eyebrows.
This is, I promise you, a real, official thing. And yes, they all transform into various cars, tanks, planes and trucks. Some of them have detachable heads that also transform into tiny versions of Ryu'n'crew. It's terrible! It's wonderful! Naturally, I want them all.
]]>Punchfest of punchfests Street Fighter V is getting a new character today. The beater-upper is called Zeku and he’s some sort of ninja man, with the ability to change forms and use a whole other moveset. Ka-pow. If you're squinting at him desperately trying to remember where you’ve met, before he comes over and strikes up a conversation, that’ll be because he previously appeared in Street Fighter Alpha 2 (albeit as a non-playable character). He’s a strong man. The Street Fighter wiki lists his skills as “Appraising antiques” and “eating fast”.
]]>Capcom today announced Street Fighter V [official site] will get new modes and V-Trigger moves in January with the launch of Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition and- wait wait wait. Capcom had promised that Street Fighter V would not receive a squillion incompatible standalone editions, as past games in the fighting game series have, and they meant it. Arcade Edition's new bits will come in a free update for all SFV players, and the Fancy Name mostly means SFV is getting a new release for new players which includes instant unlocks of its first two seasons of extra characters. Everyone can still punch everyone. No one need buy anything new.
]]>Well, East me Enders and Pano my Rama: live Esports is coming to to the BBC this month. BBC Three (which is now online only) will broadcast the new Gfinity Elite League Series One, which means four hours of Rocket League, CS:GO and Street Fighter V on iPlayer every weekend for the next six weeks.
There's a proper schedule and everything: Fridays at 9pm is for Street Fighter, which in a massive programming screw up clashes with Gardener's World. Saturday nights from 9-11 is CS:GO (no Casualty for me then), and Rocket League is happening Sunday afternoon from 5. It's all coming live from the Gfinity Arena in West London, with eight organisations taking part.
]]>Hello. Usually I write perky upbeat stories about plants and walks but today I have BEEF. It is BEEF with Capcom about a missed opportunity in Street Fighter V [official site]! SO much BEEF I could open a butcher shop or a steak restaurant. It is BEEF so important it warranted a trip to Photoshop to rectify the situation AND I had to remember how to use the color layer mode.
First: context.
]]>The next pugilist joining the Street Fighter V [official site] roster is someone old, someone new, someone bearfriendly [nice -ed.] and someone blue. Capcom have announced that they're elevating background character Kolin to playable status, sending her out to ice fools with her cryokinetic powers. She was first introduced in 1997's Street Fighter III as the personal assistant to one of those Illuminati naughties but will throw her fur hat into the ring on February 28th. Here, check out her chilly moves in this trailer:
]]>Street Fighter 5 [official site] is sending mixed signals with its first content update of 'Season 2', adding returning fighter Akuma with his iconic 'Raging Demon' combo while also adding new punishments for rage quitting. So is rage good or bad? Perhaps the distinction is that it's fine if you hang around to pose moodily at the end. The update launches today, also rebalancing a bit and adding official support for Direct Input controllers. Oh, and a sleighload of Christmassy paid costumes.
]]>Continuing plans to update Street Fighter 5 [official site] for yonks without releasing separate new Ultra Turbo Mega Editions, Capcom have announced 'Season 2' of big content updates will kick off this month with returning pugilist Akuma and a sleighload of festive fare. Punchfans will remember Akuma as a sort of Infowars Ryu. Five brand new fighters are due to follow across 2017, though they're under wraps for now. But far more important than that is everyone's wacky Christmas premium costumes.
]]>When Capcom discovered that a Street Fighter V [official site] level set atop a plane flying over Dubai was disorienting some players and even making them motion-sick, they pulled it from their competitive tournament lineup. Cowards. What rotten cowards they are. With all their know-how, they surely could've figured out a way to even the playing field by making all players equally ill. It'd certainly shake up the competitive scene if, every third fight, players fell to the floor clawing at their eyes and clutching at their guts, using tongues to manipulate their controllers while also vomiting over them.
]]>Capcom have removed the mysterious "anti-crack solution" they added to Street Fighter V [official site] in this week's update. We knew the September update would add Urien, the Illuminati VP returning from earlier games, and he's quite welcome. What was more of a surprise is the anti-crack tech that left some unable to play, triggered anti-virus and Windows warnings, and was generally unpleasant. That's no good. But hey, at least they did remove it fairly swiftly.
]]>We're almost at the end of the content roadmap Capcom laid out for the first season of Street Fighter V [official site] updates. Since February they've added newbits including a story mode and five new characters, and a sixth is the last to come this season. This month's new pugilist will be Urien, who I'm told bears the job title 'Vice President of Illuminati'. The Illuminati must be far smaller than I'd thought if even the VP does hands-on field work - or maybe this is recreational? Anyway, check out his moves:
]]>This month's Street Fighter V [official site] will launch on Tuesday, July 26th, Capcom have announced. The biggest addition is Juri joining the playable lineup, returning from Super Street Fighter IV. She's already appeared in SFV through its Story Mode, released last month, but now everyone will get to kick faces as the Taekwondo expert (cheeky modders have enabled her earlier, mind). Here, this trailer shows some of her moves:
]]>We already knew that Street Fighter V's 'cinematic story mode' would bring with it a few new characters, including the opportunity to play as them before they're added to the wider game. Now we have a trailer that shows boxer Balrog in motion, alongside a very brief glimpse of characters Juri and Urien, who are also joining the game.
]]>I will admit that my interest in this story mainly stemmed from the header image which I saw out of context and thought maybe there was a He-Man game about Skeletor having a clone army. BUT! it is infact the news that Street Fighter V [official site] is finally getting that promised story mode as a chunk of free DLC at the end of June for those who own the game:
]]>X-COM cosplayer Guile arrived in Street Fighter V [official site] last night with the promised April update for Capcom's fighting game. He's leaping, he's kicking, he's flinging wind, he's yelling his support for Sonic Boom as if it's not the worst Sonic game in years. Guile is accompanied by a new stage, the Air Force base where he and his buddies hang around sitting on crates with a boombox. And hey, because Capcom still haven't added the real-money microtransaction store, Guile is free to play with until they do. Oh, and rage quit punishment is finally in.
]]>"Sonic BOOOOM!," cries Guile to his reflection as he runs a comb meticulously through his gravity-defying, Brycreem-smothered flat top. Of all Street Fighter's heroes, there are few as egocentric as US Major Guile. The hair? Check. The shades? Check. The sleeveless shirt and tie combo? Check. The next fighter heading to Street Fighter V [official site]? Check.
He's bopping into SFV with the game's April update, Capcom have confirmed, alongside the first attempt at the promised rage quit punishment system, and the game's first DLC arena: Guile's own Air Force Base stage.
]]>Remember: Street Fighter V [official site] is playing for the long run, trying to become a solid eSport, aiming to still be around a few years from now. At launch, our review praised the punching, but lamented that so much content would arriving months later in free updates.
The first of those updates is almost here, and it's very substantial, so much so Capcom have announced they're splitting it in two. March 28th will bring Challenge Mode, rematches and improved lobbies, while new fighter Alex and the in-game shop will make their debut on the 30th. There are also a couple of free costumes as an apology for the shaky launch, and a delay on the in-game currency tied to real money. Follow me past the break and we'll go over everything.
]]>When Street Fighter V [official site] came out a fortnight ago, it was a wee bit barebones. While some absent features are things we knew would come later, like the proper story mode, others were more surprising - like key rebinding, and punishment for rage quitting. Players being able to disconnect from matches they're losing without ruining their ranking or win streak is... that's a pretty big oversight, and no fun for their opponents. Capcom now say they have a solution coming, and punishments too.
]]>The face-punching core of Street Fighter V [official site] is pretty great, so our Wot I Think says. But wrapped around that is a bit less game than some expected, as a lot of features and modes are coming later. What's there is also a bit wonky, thanks to server downtime and other technical issues. So Capcom have issued a status update which goes over the launch problems and into future plans. Expect better controller support and keyboard rebinding, for starters.
]]>Street Fighter V [official site] is out, it is pretty dang fun, though barebones right now, (or so our Wot I Think sez), and it... has picked up a few tricks from your old pal Alice. Like me playing Street Fighter, when the announcer declared the battle was on, the game promptly fell over. Pugilists faced online disconnections and downtime last night, and problems persist today. Capcom are working on it, and say they're jolly sorry.
]]>With any long-running series, there's a delicate balance between retaining the things that people love and refreshing the decor. With Street Fighter V [official site], Capcom have come close to hitting a reset button marked '1991' when it comes to fighting systems and yet this is the most forward-looking game in the series, with one eye fixed on the world of esports. It's a streamlined entry in the mighty fightin' series, for better and for worse, and we sent fisticuffs expert Andi Hamilton into the fray to see how it all works. He returned with these words of judgement.
]]>Street Fighter V [official site] is launching on Tuesday and, it's worth mentioning again, should be the only Street Fighter V Capcom ever release. No Arcade Edition. No Ultra Edition. No Turbo Tunbridge Wells Wrestlemax Edition. Just Street Fighter V, updated over time with the new characters, modes, and other things Capcom would usually package up into separate games. Some will be unlockables, with optional microtransactions to skip that. Got it? Grand?
Capcom have now detailed a little more of their initial scheduling plans, with a rough roadmap saying we should expect new face-punchers almost monthly.
]]>With Street Fighter V [official site] only a few weeks away, Capcom have opened up a bit more about what the man-puncher will offer on the story side of things. Given that Capcom are taking SFV a bit 'games as service', adding new characters and things in updates rather than new editions, it's no surprise that story will come in similar ways. Along with the typical Street Fighting stories, which will be embellished with pretty pictures, it'll have a cinematic story mode--but this will come four months after launch.
]]>Street Fighter V [official site] will run on Linux. There's a sentence I never expected to write. Through the Steam community pages for the game, Capcom have confirmed that the latest in their glorious series of biff 'em ups will support Steam OS.
"We are working closely with Valve on this endeavor, and will have more details to announce in the near future, so stay tuned for updates. Street Fighter V will also support the Steam controller, and you’ll be able to try that out right away during the upcoming beta test that takes place from December 18~20."
The beta is open to anyone with a preorder.
]]>You've got four months to build thumb callouses by tapping on walls, work on your speed and agility with shadowtapping, and build bone density destroying a bamboo stem with your phalanges, as Capcom have announced Street Fighter V [official site] is coming on February 16th, 2016. They're also confirmed the stretchy Dhalsim is returning for the brawl, and spoken a bit more about their plans to keep adding new fighters in updates rather than new releases.
]]>Capcom have announced the first Street Fighter V [official site] beta test on PC, to run October 24-25. And if you're sick of that PS4-owning mate who's been bragging on about getting console access to the beta two days prior, you'll be able to kick his virtual arse as the beta features cross-platform play.
]]>It appears Laura - a Brazlian jiu-jitsu-fighting, lightning wielding, half-finished braided hair-sporting brawler - is to be the next brand new addition to the Street Fighter V [official site] roster of characters. Although Japanese publication Famitsu posted and then pulled several images of Laura stepping-to with Ryu on Friday, NeoGaffers were quick to capture the action shots and thus allow me to deliver them to you right now. Oh, and Zangief's in and has a new trailer. Happy weekend.
]]>Capcom have revealed a brand new fighter throwing down in Street Fighter V [official site], the wind-whirling Rashid, but look, his unveiling has mostly reminded me that I never told you about a ridiculous and amazing older character confirmed to return in the new punch 'em up. Yes yes I know you may want to learn about Rashid and I'll get to the Middle Eastern scrapper soon but first: check out the absurdity of wrestler Rainbow Mika, who pumps the crowd and calls her tag-team partner to pummel peeps:
]]>For years, Capcom have iterated upon each major Street Fighter game with Turbo, Ultra, Championship, and Goodness Knows What Other Editions, tweaking the balance and adding new characters and stages. That's all good and well when you need to physically release new cartridges, but that hasn't been the case for years. So, finally, they're sticking with one game. Street Fighter V [official site] will be it - no Ultra, no Turbo.
All "balance and system adjustments" will come free. A steady flow of new content like characters is planned, for players to buy either with a virtuacash earned by playing or real money. Speaking of characters, Capcom announced a new one too, that guy with the locks.
]]>But what, you may reasonably ask, is that?
Evo is the world championships of fighting games. If you like fighting games, you're already planning to watch it, have Monday off work and are stocking up on cool snacks. If you don't hopefully you haven't already stopped reading, because Evo is the spectator event of the year unless you have some sort of allergy to excitement. Taking place each year in Las Vegas, it's a celebration of competitive play, an exhibition of extreme skill and Championship Sunday is 8+ hours of pure, undiluted hype. Here's what you should watch, when and how.
]]>It's no surprise to hear that Ken will be in Street Fighter V [official site], given that he's been one of the core characters for yonks, but Capcom's announcement has brought the surprise news that he's been given a hideous makeover.
More important than that is the amazing London stage shown off in Ken's trailer. Street Fighter's interpretations of cultures are always odd, and it's especially delightful to see that in my own city. Perhaps I spend too much time in ponds, but I don't remember the Queen's Guard hanging around train stations playing jazz. That'll be the old Blitz Spirit re-emerging during the Tube strike.
]]>The new Street Fighter V [official site] trailer is in two minds. It starts by introducing a few characters, which might lead you to believe you're going to get some insights about the roster, but then it flips into explanations of the new V-Gauge and Critical Arts systems. The V-Gauge is a new addition to the series and sits alongside Street Fighter IV's EX Gauge - it allows characters to perform unique counters and reversals, as well as "triggers" that are linked to character-specific abilities or buffs. Critical Arts are ultra-super-power combos. Ultra-super-power is also the title of the upcoming enhanced edition of Street Fighter V.
]]>At this point, most Street Fighter V [official site] character reveals are met with more relief than surprise as fans confirm the existence of their favourite fighters in the latest version of the game. M. Bison has been in practically every new edition since Street Fighter II and yet here we are, watching his addition to the roster be unvealed in a new trailer, as if it wasn’t already a sure thing. I mean, we’re not even 100% certain Ken will be invited to the fight this time. He will be though. Right? Right…
]]>When the announcement of Street Fighter V leaked on Friday, Capcom scrambled around trying to scour the Internet of all the grainy copies of a video which didn't say much beyond: Street Fighter V exists, and is coming to PC and PS4. They've gotten around to announcing SF5 now though, a process which involves a new gameplay trailer and word that- ooh! It'll have cross-platformer multiplayer across PC and PS4. That's unexpected, that.
]]>Dead or Alive: Lots Of Clothes And Yet Not A Lot Of Clothes isn't the only PC fighting game news today. It seems Street Fighter V was accidentally let out of the Capcom bag a little early, replete with a trailer which comes across a little like a men's fragrance advert.
]]>
