I remember reading about The Grannies a while back. They're a group of game devs based in Melbourne who formed a gang (the titular Grannies) of older people in Rockstars rootin', tootin' cowboy RPG Red Dead Redemption 2 - specifically Red Dead Online. In the pursuit of fun, The Grannies, using a glitch known to a lot of the community, broke through the invisible walls in the game's wild west and into another, wilder west - a landscape nobody was really meant to see.
Marie Foulston, a curator who specialises in installations focused on video games, made a short documentary film about them and what they saw in 2019. Now V Buckenham (who has made many things, but may be known to most as the creator of Cheap Bots Done Quick!) to present The Grannies to watch for free online, in an immersive website experience that itslef looks like a glitching out landscape.
]]>Rockstar have confirmed that they won’t support their digital Westworld of Red Dead Online with any further major content updates, as the development of the next Grand Theft Auto takes priority. The news came via a post on Rockstar’s newswire blog. Players among the Red Dead Online community have been vocal about their disappointment at the game’s apparent lack of support, with some even deciding to organise a funeral for the multiplayer cowboy spin-off scheduled for July 13th.
]]>Posse up, Red Dead Redemption 2 players. The results are in and science says that if you know your sturgeon from your steelhead trout you may have Rockstar's surprisingly detailed cowboy 'em up to thank for it. A published research study has found that RDR2 players, especially those who've played recently, are more likely to be able to visually identify 15 different species of animals that appear in the game. The statistical results are interesting on their own, but what's almost cooler are the anecdotes players shared during the study about things they believed they'd learned from all of RDR2's simulated wildlife.
]]>There's no shortage of unlawful mischief to commit in cowboys online, from hogtying strangers to unprompted shootouts, but Red Dead Online is adding Crimes with a capital "C" this month. A new type of mission will send you off to commit holdups, train robberies, kidnappings, and more. Better yet, you won't have to fork over premium currency to take part in these jobs, Rockstar Games have announced. Red Dead Online's Blood Money update arrives on July 13th for your life of crime to finally begin properly.
]]>Online game roleplay is a wonderful and curious exercise in creativity and adaptability, especially as the number of participants in an attempted scenario grows. Such was the case when the Wild West RP server for Red Dead Redemption 2 got together a group of players to act out the sale and transfer of cattle between two ranches. Herding cattle can't be so hard, can it? Unless people are playing the unruly cattle, that is.
]]>Red Dead Redemption 2's online mode has been separated from its singleplayer cowboy adventure today, offering Red Dead Online as a standalone game. You can still get it all together in one big RDR2 package if you'd like, but if you're more into the idea of roaming around as a cowpoke in multiplayer, you can do just that now for a mere $5 as part of its introductory sale.
Today's update also expands the Bounty Hunter role, so players old and new have more pesky outlaws to bring in, and higher ranks to reach.
]]>For those who fancy the rootin' tootin' multiplayer shootin' of Red Dead Online but aren't too interested in the grudgin' trudgin' singleplayer buy-in of the full Red Dead Redemption 2 package, Rockstar have announced a standalone version of RDO. It's launching next week with an introductory price of $5 for several months, which, sure, is a price that'd get my interest. Not least of all because I want to try doing conference calls inside Red Dead Online.
]]>As it was leaked, so it shall come to pass. Red Dead Online has been updated with a Halloween-themed Outlaw Pass. The new Outlaw Pass has 20 ranks to climb with unlockable rewards and will run through November 16th. A new zombie game mode has been added as well and—wait, hold on. No, it isn't a follow up to Undead Nightmare, the well-liked zombie expansion for the original Red Dead Redemption.
]]>Red Dead Redemption 2 Online just got a new update earlier this week adding the Naturalist role, but that certainly won't stop folks from digging up secrets planned for future updates. My instinct is to holler "stop peeking at your presents and enjoy the update you just got!" but I'll admit I'm very partial to in-game Halloween events so even I'm distracted by these rumoured leaks.
]]>Rockstar is inviting you to become one with nature in Red Dead Online today. At least, I'm reasonably sure that's what they mean. They're introducing a new Frontier Pursuit "that will introduce players to the secrets of naturalism", which sounds a lot like you'll be able to become a hunter, or maybe just make friends with the animals. Hm, actually, probably not. Let's be honest, Red Dead isn't really a "make friends with the animals" sorta game.
]]>Red Dead Online cheaters get up to all sorts of mischief by summoning various NPCs from the game data into the world. As only one of oh so many examples, there was a spree of two-headed skeleton attacks several months ago. Mischief becomes more malign when they, say, summon white-robed KKK members to attack other players. So of course they're doing that. Rockstar say they have removed the ability for these character models to be summoned in Red Dead Online.
]]>The wild west is a dangerous place. You'd think it's because of the cougars and grizzly bears and alligators but no, my real nemesis in Red Dead Redemption 2 is riding or running straight off a cliff I wasn't playing attention to. Inevitably that ends up with me dead at the bottom of a ravine, preserved in a loading screen as death by falling, though it should really claim death by dumb. Some players have found a way around that, though it requires a level of forethought that I apparently don't have.
]]>As they are wont to do, the hackers are at it again. Fortunately, Red Dead Online hackers are usually funny folks. Now it seems that the dead are coming back to life—and no, it's not a belated Halloween event or a sneak reveal of a new Undead Nightmare DLC. Skeletons are being raised and sent after players to sock them in the face brawler style.
]]>Across the next fortnight, GTA Online players can claim $2,000,000 of crimecash for free just for logging in, while Red Dead Online players can scoop a free Bounty Hunter license as well as some free guns and ammo. Rockstar announced the freebies today while crowing about "another record-breaking holiday season" for both multiplayer modes, spaffing all sorts of claims against the digiwall. For example: December 2019 was GTA Online's "largest month ever in terms of player numbers," which is pretty impressive considering how old it is. But mostly I'm here for the free stuff.
]]>It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in the Online modes of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption 2. Rockstar started the Christmas events yesterday, dressing the sandbox worlds in Christmas finery, placing presents under our trees, and firing up the snow machines. I have already won a GTA Online snowball fight to the death while dressed in my Christmas warms so my season is looking very merry indeed.
]]>Oh sure the dream of the dying wild west is grand and all, but Red Dead Online now offers players a grander dream: being Veronica Lodge off Riverdale. Rockstar today launched the Moonshiners Update, letting players start their own hooch business and build up to running a speakeasy. Get a pal to pretend to be Archie, running around beating up criminals. Another mate's cutting about as Veronica, quietly offing people with her serial killer genes. Just don't let yourself be someone else's Reggie. Oh! Right, moonshining. Yes.
]]>Red Dead Redemption 2 Online should be getting a nice upgrade after the release of RedM, a framework mod that allows players to run their own modded servers. It's from the same developers who made Grand Theft Auto V Online's FiveM mod, the backdoor responsible for those Twitch-ruling GTA streams where people roleplay as cops, criminals, communists, and more. The prospect of expanding Rockstar's Wild West in a similar fashion is pretty exciting.
]]>If you have thus far delayed your wild west adventures because you don't care to use either Rockstar or Epic's store, your wait is over. One month after debuting on PC, Red Dead Redemption 2 is sold on Steam too.
]]>Just like in real life, I can't seem to pick a job in Red Dead Online and stick to it. I want to be a trader and collector and bounty hunter all at the same time. Rockstar are now adding a fourth Frontier Pursuit so that I can sell moonshine and own a speakeasy—the real American Dream.
]]>If you've played the original Red Dead Redemption (or, indeed, any of the GTA games), it should come as no surprise whatsoever to you that Red Dead Redemption 2 cheats exist. Rockstar have hidden away clues to their cheat codes inside various newspapers scattered about RDR2's vast wild world - but seeing as you're here, I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess that you don't really want to go to all that trouble tracking down each and every code. Well, good news! Our Red Dead Redemption 2 cheats guide lists all 37 cheats in the game so you can get right down to augmenting your singleplayer experience however you please!
]]>One of the many team-based PvP modes available to players of Red Dead Online is Up In Smoke - a fast-paced race to destroy your opponent's base before they destroy yours by transporting explosives to the enemy camp. There's room for both offence and defence in this action-packed PvP mode, and our Red Dead Online Up In Smoke guide will walk you through how to give your team the best chance of success in both regards.
]]>Dollars and cents aren't the only currency in Red Dead Online, no sirree. Gold Nuggets and Gold Bars are the coveted riches you're really after, and as you'll no doubt have already discovered, they can be pretty hard to come by in large quantities. But fear not, for our Red Dead Online Gold guide will walk you through everything you need to know about these luminous bars of monetary delight, from what you can spend them on to how you should go about getting your hands on them!
]]>With Red Dead Redemption 2 at long last released on PC, we've got a whole new audience of players just starting to ask questions about Red Dead Online, RDR2's multiplayer component and their wild-west equivalent to GTA Online. Our Red Dead Online guide will walk you through everything you need to know, from how to get started playing online on PC to details of all the activities and mischief you can get up to once you're past the opening mission!
]]>Red Dead Redemption 2 is finally live on PC, and scores of players are already queuing into all the Showdown and PvP modes on offer in the game's enormous Red Dead Online component. While many will be entirely content just to gallop around in Free Roam, if you've got more of a competitive streak then you'll no doubt be interested in queuing up into these PvP playlists yourself. This Red Dead Online modes guide will explain how each of the 16+ PvP modes in RDR2 actually work, along with tips on how to reach the top of the leaderboard in each one.
]]>Was there ever any doubt that Red Dead Online would include a Battle Royale mode for players to duke it out until only one is left standing, bloody and victorious? Make It Count takes several of the hallmarks of the battle royale genre, but pares down the standard formula into a very fast-paced and concise mode for up to 16 players. It's far from easy to win with any consistency in this mode, but our Red Dead Online Make It Count guide will give you our top tips on how to maximise your chances.
]]>There are a great many different competitive PvP modes available in Red Dead Online, but few are as intriguing and unique as Fear of the Dark - a limited-time Halloween-themed mode which pits six Hunters against two supernaturally powerful Night Stalkers in an objective-infused deathmatch. Learn the ins and outs of how to play and win as both sides in the below Red Dead Online Fear of the Dark guide, and you'll need never fear the dark again.
]]>Red Dead Online has been announced by Rockstar (as if it was ever in doubt) and they say it'll be an "evolution" of the rootin' tootin' multiplayer in the first Red Dead Redemption. In other words, a big online version of the open world in Red Dead Redemption 2, where you can trot about on your pony, buy fashionable spurs, and get shot by ingrates and outlaws with terrifying old west names such as XxAnime4LifexX and SackOfShit1999. That sounds super. But all this is academic to us. Because Reddy Deddy 2 still hasn't been confirmed for PC, and we are likely facing a bit of a wait.
