All the flap about World Of Warcraft: Dragonflight has made it easier than ever to forget there's a whole New World out there, but there is, and it's temporarily free. You can jump into the frontier of Amazon Games vaguely piratical MMO without paying a penny this weekend, where you're free to lark about until December 19th. Has the recent early game overhaul alleviated the opening grind? Perhaps!
]]>New World is getting its first major expansion in the form of Brimstone Sands, an arid endgame location for players to contest that comes bundled with a bunch of early game streamlining, and a brand-new weapon, too. I got hands-on with the expansion's first hour or so and had a chat with the game's creative director about it all. One year on, is it everything the game needs to satisfy long-time fans and attract newcomers? Yes! Well. Maybe...?
]]>Amazon’s open-world fantasy MMO New World is rocking out this summer with its own version of Glastonbury, dubbed the Summer Medleyfaire. You can already grab your instrument on the game’s Public Test Realm but everyone will have the chance to take part later this month. It’s a hefty one, but you can watch the summer update video below to find out more.
]]>Amazon Games’ fantasy MMORPG New World has received its latest update, ‘Arenas’, which means you can now smack other players upside the head in teams of three. The update brings PvP arena combat in best-of-five contests that Amazon say are for “glory and riches”, but then quickly qualifies that they're actually for unique stuff to decorate your in-game house with. The trailer makes the whole thing seem pretty wacky, see for yourself below.
]]>Heart Of Madness was announced back at the start of March, with promises of concluding New World's storyline. Then it was going to release on Tuesday of this week, but was delayed due to a last minute bug. Then it was going to release on Wednesday of this week, but was delayed due to a last minute bug.
Well, it's here now, Thursday, and it also adds a new Blunderbuss weapon and endless balance changes to the MMO.
]]>Mike Frazzini, the head of Amazon Games, is leaving over a decade after helping found the megacorp's video games division. Hey, it's probably good to go out on a high, having finally found success with New World and Lost Ark after years of failures and cancellations. A prior report claimed he was part of why it took them so long to do anything, mind.
]]>When will New World's winter event be taking place? Whatever you celebrate at this time of year — or even if you don't celebrate at all — if you're a New World player you're no doubt eager to see what the people of Aeternum get up to around the winter solstice. Surely an island so in tune with both nature and magic must mark the occasion somehow? As it turns out, they do, with their own Winter Convergence Festival.
]]>While New World seems mostly to be occupied in a war against exploits like duping, forever firing off fixes or disabling features, this week brings an update focused on adding newness. That's nice. The 'Into The Void' update introduces the magical new Void Gauntlet, a weapon which can be used to heal or harm. You can perform violence upon new enemies too, because various Varangian forces have arrived to plunder the island.
]]>New World, Amazon Games' opening move into game dev, was not always an MMORPG. It used to be a survival horror game. According to Katy Kaszynski, senior producer at Amazon Games, the team got really far down that road. "They created it. That was before my time, but that game was almost done," Kaszynski tells me, just after delivering a presentation on New World's development at this year's Develop Conference in Brighton. "They really thought it was going to go alpha, launch, and they were going to ship that out."
A survival horror is pretty different from the jaunty, vaguely piratical, magical fantasy RPG that New World is today: lush forests, sunny grassy plains, and factions engaged in an endless war for territory. So what happened? According to Kaszynski, it's all down to Amazon's first 'Leadership Principle': Customer Obsession.
]]>Server transfers were introduced to New World last month, letting players boot their characters to a new world. It was implemented as a way to ease queue times in the popular MMORPG, but didn't work completely to plan - it caused a gold duping glitch, and some players have been blocked from transferring altogether. Amazon Games say they're currently working on resolving these blockages, and are planning a second round of server transfers before the year's end, so everyone has a chance to jump worlds.
]]>New World turned off wealth transfers last week to stop a coin duplication exploit.
Now its developers say they've turned wealth transfers back on and "permanently banned players who exploited the Coin/Item dupe issue," among many other updates.
]]>A new update hit New World today, aimed partially at cracking down on gold sellers and exploits used to duplicate items and cash. Amazon say they've banned many players who were spamming chat advertising their illicit services. They also blasted a blog post talking about many of the issues concerning players, explaining things, detailing plans for fixes, and other welcome news.
]]>How do you level up Trade Skills in New World? Trade Skills are non-combat skills in New World — just about any activity your character takes part in that isn't tied to their weapons is linked to a Trade Skill. There are 17 of these skills in all, separated into three sub-categories: Gathering, Refining, and Crafting.
]]>New World has temporarily disabled "all forms of wealth transfers" due to an exploit that allows players to duplicate gold. In a post on the game's forum, a community manager warned that punishments would be served to players who used the exploit.
]]>New World's long-awaited character transfers have been taken away almost as soon as they arrived, because they've caused a glitch that allows players to duplicate gold. The bug came about after the MMORPG's 1.0.3 update this week. It makes it so characters don't save properly after transferring, letting them trade gold and items to others while magically keeping it in their own pockets. Amazon have paused server transfers for the time being to work on a fix, and have warned players that those caught exploiting the glitch will be banned.
]]>Server transfers opened up in New World overnight, letting players shunt their explorers from one world to another. This is a desirable feature in many MMOs, and particularly in this one because servers were so overloaded at launch that Amazon recommended players join any old server then transfer to their desired home later once things settled. All players get one transfer for free, but only one, with Amazon planning to start selling that service later.
]]>New World players have found an exploit that lets you turn invincible, which is certainly not the sort of exploit you want in your PvP-focused MMORPG. According to players who've encountered the bug, it's pretty easy to replicate, and folks are calling for wars to be disabled until there's a fix. Amazon Games say they're aware of the problem and are investigating, so hopefully they'll patch the game soon to make sure everyone's staying vincible.
]]>My heart sinks every time I accept a quest in MMORPG New World, which isn't ideal. These are tickets to adventure, to discovery, to that sweet, sweet EXP. But the more time I spend with the game, the more I'm beginning to loathe them. It's got nothing to do with what you actually do in them, it's the getting there that's the problem. I have to run my little legs ragged and I'm tired. I'm so very tired of it.
]]>What is there to do once you reach the endgame in New World? Currently at least, New World has a level cap of 60. There's a debate among MMO fans as to whether reaching the endgame should be the whole point of playing, or if it's really just a nice bonus after you've finished the satisfying business of levelling your character up from nothing. Whichever opinion you hold, most can agree that it's nice to have something to keep you coming back to the game that you've spent all those hours mastering.
]]>How can you upgrade tools in New World? Tools and weapons in New World can come in various different qualities, as reflected by their tier. Technically in this game you don't upgrade your tools — in as much as you don't use a lower-tier item as a base for a higher-tier upgrade. But there are ways of ensuring you craft a higher-tier tool, and you can do that regardless of whether you have a lower-tier version in hand or not; so in effect this system works more or less like tool upgrades in other games, but with a step removed.
]]>New World's server transfer system won't be as flexible as first suggested. Amazon had originally said that players would be able to switch between servers in different regions, letting you move a character from, for example, a North American server to a European one. As of yesterday, they confirmed that's not the case.
]]>Even the name New World feels like a brash statement of intent, doesn't it? Amazon are shouldering their way into the market with a brand new MMORPG, a fresh digital playground that is, the name implies, unlike any you've seen before! In practise, of course, it is a lot like MMOs you've seen before, albeit with its own twists on the formula to get you hooked. New World understands that formula well, and I am a simple creature, so attaching a button marked Endorphin Release to my brain and pressing it every five minutes or so works as well on me as it does on a lab rat.
]]>How can you catch Tadpoles in New World, and what are they used for? Tadpoles are a deceptively helpful resource in New World. It's hard to imagine a more unassuming creature, but you'll need to catch some Tadpoles to complete some useful early Town Projects. Furthermore, Tadpoles can be salvaged into Life Motes, a crafting resource which goes into some good mid-game recipes.
]]>Over the last few days, many New World players have been struggling to get into Amazon's popular MMORPG. Some reported being booted to menu after queuing, while others haven't been able to open the game at all. Last night, the devs suggested it was a problem with Easy Anti-Cheat, and offered a workaround so folks could get back on the grind. As it turns out, other games that use EAC have seen similar issues, and now Steam has rolled back a client update to try and fix them.
]]>What is Voidmetal used for in New World, and where can you find it? Voidmetal is one of New World's high-end crafting materials, used in the recipes for some of the game's best weapons, armor, and other desirable items.
]]>What PvP modes are available in New World, and how do you take part in them? New World is an MMO, which means interaction with other players forms a big part of the game. While it's far from every-player-for-themself on the Isle of Aeternum — you're encouraged to join up with a Company (New World's version of Guilds, basically) to make the most of co-operative gameplay — there's naturally a PvP aspect involved as well.
]]>How do you buy a house in New World? Upon arriving in Aeternum, your New World character quickly learns that they're likely stuck on the island for life thanks to the powerful magical field that surrounds it. On the plus side though, residents of Aeternum tend towards immortality, so it's definitely not all bad news. One thing's for sure though: since they're here literally forever, your plucky Conquistador is going to want to find a place to call home.
]]>A week after launch New World continues to see hundreds of thousands of players logging on to get a piece of that sweet new MMORPG action. Just this weekend, the game nearly hit a million concurrent players on Steam. But with that popularity has come long queues, and some players are going AFK once they get in so they don't lose their spots if they can't play immediately. It should be harder for them to hog server space now though, because Amazon Games released New Worlds' first post-launch patch last night, changing some AFK rules.
]]>How do you take part in New World Invasions? Invasions, also known as Corrupted Invasions, are PvE battles in New World primarily aimed at high-level players looking for late-game content. In this guide, we go through the requirements to take part in Invasions, as well as some tips on how to prevail in them.
]]>Which is the best starting zone to get in New World? Unfortunately, at the time of writing, you can't choose or change your New World starting zone. Once you've joined a server and created your character you play through a brief prologue, and then the game randomly spawns you into one of its four starting locations.
]]>As MMOs often do at launch, New World had busy servers and long queues to get in game last week. That's certainly not stopping folks from attempting to play though, as New World hit another concurrent player record for itself. It was already the most popular game on Steam last week with over 700,000 concurrent players. As of yesterday, New World's peak player count was nearly a million players. We don't know how many of those folks are hanging around in those server queues, of course, but they're all at least trying to play.
]]>Where can you find Saltpeter in New World? In New World, Saltpeter is used to craft gunpowder, which in turn is a key component in crafting musket cartridges. Depending on your chosen character build and the weapons you favour, this could be an absolutely essential resource for you. But exploring Aeternum in search of a specific resource can be an intimidating prospect due to the sheer size of the island, so we've put together this guide to help you find the best Saltpeter spawn locations.
]]>Where can you find Petalcaps in New World? Petalcaps are a useful resource in New World, since they're a key component to crafting many of the game's potions. It can be overwhelming looking for resources on Aeternum, simply because there's just so much flora and fauna knocking about (and so many other players looking for the same things). Read on for everything you need to know about where Fronded Petalcaps spawn so that you can narrow your search.
]]>New World has implemented a system to stop players from creating characters on "full" servers. Announced today via Twitter, the system is part of Amazon's ongoing efforts to deal with overwhelming demand from folks wanting to play the new MMO.
]]>Where can you find Briar Branches in New World? Harvesting from Briar bushes in New World can yield a number of different resources including Briar Branches, which are needed to complete the Windsward quests No Confidence Stew or A Prickly Request, as well as being useful for crafting. But with so much greenery around the isle of Aeternum, sticking your face into every shrub to see if it's the one you're looking for is a time-consuming prospect. On this page, we save you (at least some of) the trouble by explaining where you can find Briars in New World.
]]>Desperate to find out how to get unstuck in New World? It's always a good thing when developers add an "unstuck" feature into their game - particularly a sprawling MMORPG like New World where getting your character stuck in bits of landscape is more common than you might think. Fortunately, it is possible to get unstuck in New World, and this quick walkthrough will explain how to do it.
]]>How do you transfer servers in New World? When New World launched back in September, many players eager to avoid hours-long queues hopped into any server they could get a spot in, with the assurance that server transfers would be made available in due course. After a few bumps in the road, we're pleased to confirm that New World's server transfer feature is now live for all players!
]]>Want to know if you can change your name in New World? It's a common tale of woe among MMO players: your ideal name is already taken, so you have to settle for an inferior moniker. Then later you realise that it just doesn't sit right and you need a name name to strike fear into the hearts of your enemies. But can it be done? Find out whether you can rename your character in New World below.
]]>How long is New World's AFK timer? Amazon's gigantic new MMO New World has had quite a launch — with players reporting hours-long queue times in the first weeks before they can even set foot on the island of Aeternum. Amazon have promised more and bigger servers will be added to handle the demand.
]]>Want to know how to save in New World? MMOs can be complicated beasts, and you could easily spend hours just mining iron or strolling along the shores of Aeternum in New World. The last thing you’d want is that time to be wasted by failing to save your game.
This guide will tell you how to save your game in New World, so that you don’t need to feel unsure about whether all your progress will be waiting for you next time you log on.
]]>How do you claim Wheel of Time crossover event Twitch Drops in New World? Twitch is an Amazon-owned platform and New World is a game developed by Amazon, so it's absolutely unsurprising that there's some crossover in the form of New World Twitch Drops.
]]>Where can you find iron ore in New World? Crafting is very important in New World, as it is in most MMOs. If you want to make new weapons or armour for your character, you’ll probably end up needing some iron ore pretty soon.
This guide will walk you through everything that you need to know about Iron in New World, including how to get iron ore and what you can use iron ore to make.
]]>What is the best armor in New World, and how do you craft it? New World is a game all about war and conquest, so naturally armor plays a large role and should be one of your first considerations when choosing your character's loadout. Fortunately, armor is abundant on Aeternum. Unfortunately, that can make it very difficult to decide what pieces to equip, especially as the game doesn't waste a lot of time explaining it to you. But luckily, that's what this New World armor guide is for.
]]>Want to find Turkey locations in New World? Turkeys roam the world of Aeternum, gobbling as they trot around various areas. Though they are rather cute to watch, Turkeys are the main way to get feathers, poultry, and eggs in New World, making them quite important.
This guide will walk you through everything that you need to find and skin Turkeys in New World, so that you can save time searching for them and get on with completing quests for your faction.
]]>New World is out, and that's exciting. It's been ages since we've seen a big new MMORPG, which is possibly why thousands upon thousands of you have sat in endless queues trying to get into overloaded servers. But would you like to know what players have been doing while you waited? They've been wiggling around on the floor like budget Human Centipedes.
]]>Amazon's sandbox MMO New World instantly become one of the most-played games on Steam when it launched this week (briefly the most), and some of those 700,000 'players' even made it through the server queues to actually play. The devs have been scrambling to meet demand ever since and continue to open new servers, in the past 24 hours opening over 100 new New World worlds. They're also exploring the possibility of increasing the capacity of individual servers.
]]>As is ever the case in starting a new MMO, picking a character name can be tough. Not least because naming things is hard, but also because some words are on the no-no list. In Amazon's MMO New World, that includes most versions of attempting to name your character after Amazon's founder. As Graham found out yesterday, you can't be Jeff Bezos in New World. Well, not exactly, anyway. You can be close to Jeff Bezos, depending on how far you're willing to stretch his name. At least one player—though I suspect there are hundreds more—has successfully bent the rules and landed in Aeternum as a knockoff Jeff.
]]>Which Faction should you pick in New World, and how do you start and join Companies? Amazon's new MMO New World features both PvP and PvE gameplay, and even though it is theoretically possible to go it alone and still enjoy some of the features, joining up with other players is a lot more fun. The complex social heirarchies of New World are divided up into Factions and Companies — two separate, but linked, types of player organisation. It can all be a bit confusing, though, so below we've laid out the difference between them, as well as how to join a Faction or Company.
]]>Even though you can’t play as Jeff Bezos, Amazon Game Studios’ MMO New World is proving popular. So popular, in fact, that some players are apparently willing to queue for hours if it means joining their preferred server. If you find yourself waiting to get to the front of the line, why not kill time efficiently by reading this guide to New World’s best settings? Despite some light-looking system requirements, New World can hammer your hardware in certain areas, and even if you own one of the best graphics cards it’s worth knowing which settings to tone down in exchange for those morish frames per second.
]]>Want to learn about Azoth in New World? Azoth is a very important resource that you will use for some crucial activities in New World, including fast travel and crafting. You'll do those often in an MMO, so Azoth’s pretty darn useful.
This guide will explain everything that you need to know about Azoth, including where you can find Azoth and the quickest way to farm Azoth in New World.
]]>What are the best builds in New World? New World shakes up the MMO formula by having no set character classes. Instead, players are given the freedom to develop their chracters with any combination of Attributes and Weapon Masteries that best suit their playstyles.
]]>New World has had quite the start to life, becoming the most popular game on Steam last night. Unfortunately, the MMORPG's popularity has caused an awful lot of queuing, with players having to wait hours to get their preferred servers. Amazon Games have announced a sort of workaround for that, though. Over the next two weeks, if you get your character started on a lower player count server, the devs will let you transfer them for free to the server you want to settle down in.
]]>Picture the scene. You're playing newly released coloniast theme park New World when who should walk over to you but Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. The billionaire says that he's locked out of his bank accounts, but if you buy him several Amazon gift cards, he'll pay you back with "extra" once he gets his access back.
This situation probably can't happen, because "Jeff Bezos" and almost every variation of it aren't permitted names in Amazon's MMO.
]]>Amazon's MMO New World launched earlier today, and it's apparently great if you like queues.
To put the login issues players are experiencing in context however, it's maybe worth noting that New World is currently the most popular game on Steam, knocking CS:GO from its perch within hours of release.
]]>What are the best weapons in New World? From the surprisingly mighty Hatchet to the shiny new Void Gauntlet, there are many factors to consider when choosing your New World weapons. A loadout you feel comfortable with can be the difference between life and (temporary un-)death on the island of Aeternum, where both the environment itself and other players pose a potentially deadly threat. In this New World weapons tier list, we've ranked each weapon according to our experiences, and included some further details to help you choose the weapon that will work best for your playstyle.
]]>At long last, Amazon's MMO New World has launched. After multiple delays and two rather popular betas, folks can now jump onto the supernatural island of Aeternum and stay there for as long as they please. The EU servers are already live, with the rest of the world to follow throughout today. Do watch out if you're jumping in this morning though, because some players are reporting long queue times, while others are struggling to get into the queue in the first place.
]]>The last time I got some brief hands-on time with Amazon's upcoming MMO New World, I emerged from Aeternum feeling pretty positive about this new kid on the massively multiplayer block. Crafting, in particular, had me pretty excited. But having spent a big chunk of time in its open beta, I've come away feeling a bit, I don't know, bleh? If anything, I just wanted to go back to my beloved Final Fantasy XIV.
]]>Looking for tips and tricks on surviving in New World? Amazon's behemoth of an MMORPG took Steam by storm during its closed and open beta periods in July and September, respectively. Now the full release is out, and with it has arrived a great surge in questions asked by new players on what they should be doing, how to gather, how to craft, how to fight, and so much more.
We get it. It's an MMO. It can be overwhelming. But follow the below tips and tricks on getting started in New World and you'll find firm footing from which you can begin your character's journey across the mystical, dangerous, and fascinating land of Aeturnum.
]]>How can you level up fast in New World? With many of New World's players having reached the lofty heights of Level 60 by now, newcomers and those who decided to savour the journey are likely eager to catch up, especially if they enjoy engaging in PvP combat. Fortunately, leveling in New World doesn't need to be too arduous, just as long as you know how to keep your XP gains flowing steadily.
Below we'll walk you through the best sources of XP in New World, from Main Quests to Town Missions; and we'll also go through small things that you can do to boost the XP you gain over time. We'll also explain how to improve your weapon masteries as efficiently as possible.
]]>Back in July, thousands upon thousands of players descended upon New World's last beta, suggesting that Amazon might actually have a winner with their upcoming MMO. Unfortunately, they delayed it just a week later, making players wait an extra month to get their hands on it again. You'll be able to get a little bit of a fix this weekend though, because New World is getting an open beta that starts later this very day.
]]>Remember how all those RTX 3090 graphics cards suddenly died while running Amazon’s New World beta? EVGA, manufacturers of the seemingly most affected models, claim to have found the true culprit: iffy soldering. Specifically on a small number of RTX 3090 cards from early in EVGA’s production run.
]]>The next big trailer bonanza hosted by everyone's pal Geoff Keighley has just come and gone. You can watch all of Gamescom Opening Night Live if you don't want to miss out on all the bants. If you just want to know who showed up with what, well we've got that list here for you.
]]>New World proved pretty darn successful with its last beta, racking up a whopping 200,000 concurrent players. But if you missed that one, then I have good news for you - it's getting an open beta on September 9th ahead of its full release on September 28th. The news was announced during Gamescom Opening Night Live, where we were also treated to a new trailer showing some of the pretty areas and evil beasts we'll encounter in Amazon's MMO.
]]>Anyone else having flashbacks to the late months of 2020 yet? You will be now. Amazon have just announced that their big fantasy MMORPG New World is delaying launch yet again. Just a little longer this time, to the end of September. Now that the closed beta is over and done with, they say that they need some extra time to incorporate feedback from players. Instead of its previously planned August 31 launch date, the new official departure date is September 28. For real this time.
]]>Want to learn about the New World attributes and how they work? With New World's first major content update now live, a number of systems have been overhauled. While Attributes haven't seen too many changes, the introduction of a brand-new weapon type means that there's a whole new balancing act to get used to if you want to scale your attributes to make the most of your new toy.
]]>Are there any mounts in New World? Unsurprisingly it's a question that has crossed the mind of many a new player joining New World with the game's full release. Surely there's a faster way of getting about than letting your character auto-run at a leisurely pace down the hundreds of winding paths and roads that make up Aeturnum?
It's a simple question with a simple answer, so let's not waste time: read on to find out whether mounts exist in New World.
]]>What is the max level in New World? It would be very strange if there weren't a level cap, after all. Almost every MMO out there has a maximum level that a character can reach, otherwise the potential for endless growth would split the playerbase across an insurmountable skill gap - and that's something Amazon definitely wants to avoid.
Keep reading to learn what the max level is in New World, and what this level cap means for its players.
]]>Want to learn how to make Camp in New World? Or perhaps you know how to set up a Camp, but you're now unsure how to upgrade your Camp to access better crafting options and other benefits. Continue reading, and you'll find the answers to both these questions below.

]]>Trying to figure out how to play with friends in New World? It's a frequent question among players just starting their New World journey, especially now that the game has received its full release. It's a fairly simple business once you know how, and the good news is that you can form a party with friends no matter how far away they are from you, as long as you know how to find and use the Social screen in-game.
Keep on reading and we'll show you exactly how to invite friends to play with you in New World.
]]>Not sure how to get Fiber or Hemp in New World? Don't worry, it seems to be a common stumbling block for new players. New World has a fairly good on-boarding process (as you'd hope from an MMO), but there's still a lot it doesn't teach you - such as where to go to find Hemp plants from which you can gather Fiber, a material used in the crafting of all sorts of useful items.
Learn how to get Fiber in New World with the below map of Hemp plant locations, and all the things you can make with Fibers, from clothing to Fishing Poles.
]]>Want to learn how to fast travel in New World? Amazon's ambitious foray into the realms of MMO has given players a colossal new world to explore, as the highly-anticipated game sees its full release. But with such a colossal world, and with no mounts to speak of, it'd take rather a long time to get from point to point without a fast travel option.
Fortunately, New World has two different fast travel options, and we'll explain them both in detail below, along with the costs, benefits, and drawbacks of fast travel across Aeturnum.
]]>Where are New World's best fishing hotspots located? In all honesty, who doesn't want to sack off the day-to-day drudgeries of being a conquistador on a magical island, and just go fishing in the crystal-clear waters of Aeternum? Why would anyone want to play a gigantic MMO for any reason other than equipping a Fishing Pole and spending a bit of downtime seeing what you can catch in various different bodies of water?
Below we'll walk you through how to get your hands on a Fishing Pole and bait in New World, and how to fish without breaking your line. We'll also show you all the best fishing hotspots on one handy map.
]]>The beta for Amazon's upcoming MMORPG New World is in full swing now, and it finally seems as though they have a game on their hands that might not need to be un-released. On Sunday, over 200,000 players descended into New World, and it's currently sat in the top ten most-played games on Steam. For reference, that's about eight times the number of players Amazon's ill-fated hero shooter Crucible ever had (before it eventually got canned).
]]>The closed beta for Amazon's MMO New World kicked off earlier this week. As MMOs are wont to do, there were some initial hiccups, though not the ones you'd usually expect. Numerous players reported that their graphics cards overheated or died while playing in the beta, many specifically EVGA's Nvidia RTX 3090 cards. Amazon quickly released a patch to alleviate concerns about frame rates in game. EVGA have now also confirmed that they will be replacing affected GPUs.
]]>Right now I'm playing a lot of MMO Final Fantasy XIV and I've not crafted a single thing, not one itty bitty ring or tattered leather belt. And I don't plan on it either, until at least I've reached the retirement endgame where people ditch fighting and become carpenters who sit in city centres and saw wood for hours on end.
My point being - it never feels essential, you know? Which is why I liked New World's take on crafting, which grips you firmly by the shoulders and shakes the complacency out of you. Here, there's no getting away with it. Either you craft, or you don't progress at all.
]]>The big closed beta for Amazon's MMO New World just kicked off yesterday and things initially appeared to be going smoother than I'd expected. I started watching a few folks play, as I'd hoped to. Ed seems to have enjoyed it so far according to his New World preview. Since yesterday though, things have gotten a bit too hot to handle for some folks using RTX 3090 graphics cards. Players across several different forums are reporting overheating that's led to GPU failure. Amazon are aware of the issue, and have started with some tips to help players avoid overheating.
Update: Amazon have now said that they have "seen no indication of widespread issues with 3090s" during alpha or beta testing but plan to release a frame capping patch today in order to reassure beta players.
]]>New World is Amazon's foray into the MMORPG genre and I got hands-on with an early build of its opening hours, which had me create a character, fight through a tutorial area, and graduate to a neighbouring town filled with vendors and plentiful quest markers. So, only a small portion of what's undoubtedly a game built for hundreds of hours of play, but enough to get a handle on whether I had that itch to get back in there and clock another hour or two towards that first hundred in its world. That's what matters when it comes to MMOs right? And I've got to say yes. Yes, the itch could use a good scratch.
]]>I continue to look at Amazon's upcoming MMO New World with a wistful lack of actual desire. I'm of a similar opinion to Ed, who said he wants to play MMOs again but doesn't like them anymore. I too want to be the me that still enjoys MMOs. Even if I'm not positive I want to play New World, I can't deny my curiousity. I'll be watching livestreams of other folks playing in its closed beta next week to see if just maybe it sparks my interest. Perhaps you should too if you're similarly undecided.
]]>Amazon's next attempt at releasing a video game is approaching again. After multiple delays, their MMO New World is entering closed beta in July. Amazon have even posted a flashy new trailer and committed to their August launch date. Their 17th century fantasy colonial world is really going to set sail this time, it seems. I'm not sure I have faith that it will break any new ground for MMOs, but I do honestly hope it fares better than their online shooter Crucible.
]]>Here's a recent trend in videogame discourse: now, whenever a game is delayed, the immediate response from a large segment of the audience is, 'Good - better that it be delayed than be another Cyberpunk'. CD Projekt Red made such a big mess they've inadvertently made life easier for other devleopers!
So it is with New World, the much-delayed MMO from Amazon Games Studios. It's been delayed again and is now due to launch in August.
]]>I do love a long read about how things went wrong on a videogame, and Amazon Game Studios have gone wrong on several now. The latest report of dysfunction at the makers (and cancellers) of Breakaway and Crucible is over at Bloomberg, and it mirrors a lot of what had been reported previously, including that the executives in charge don't understand games, and the games designed to meet corporate objectives without much heed paid to what people want to play.
]]>Amazon's expedition into game development has hit another bump in the road. Their open-world historical fantasy MMO New World was scheduled for release on August 25th. They've now pushed back to spring of 2021 to take "time to get things where we want them before we fully release."
]]>Amazon are going all-in on the gaming scene this year. First they jumped onto the hero-shooter trend with Crucible, and now their MMORPG, New World, is next. At the PC Gaming Show today they revealed a gameplay trailer showing off some of PvP combat, and treated us to some info on its closed beta coming this July.
]]>Amazon Game Studios announced their upcoming 17th century MMO New World late last year. It's planned for a release this May and at only three months out, it seems like I know a lot less than I'd like to about what on Earth (or Aeternum?) this new open world online game is supposed to be. Amazon released another in a series of developer diaries today talking more about world lore and factions but frankly I still don't think it tells us much.
]]>Like a heavily-sponsored Santa Claus, the Game Awards swept in last night and left us a pile of presents to unwrap. If you did the smart thing and slept through the event, you'll have missed a bunch of new announcements. Alice O and Graham did some amazing work in writing up as much as they could as it happened, but a few sly games snuck past 'em. Plus, sometimes it's just nice to have everything all in once place. Here's everything that was announced.
]]>Amazon Game Studios today announced plans to launch New World, their supernatural 17th century coloniser MMO, in May 2020. Off we'll head to a mysterious fictional Atlantic island to battle creatures, cultists, and sometimes other players. This news comes six months after Amazon's internal game development group reportedly laid off dozens off staff and binned several projects, and I am a little surprised that New World has survived. Here, a new trailer from The Game Awards shows a little more of Aeternum, the Eternal Isle.
]]>Amazon’s video game studio have laid off “dozens” of employees, according to a report by Kotaku’s Jason Schreier. They’ve also cancelled some unannounced projects, saying that they want to “prioritise development” of the supernatural colonialist America simulator New World, 12-player, class-based battle royale-alike Crucible, and some other projects that aren’t yet unveiled.
]]>Amazon have announced three PC games being made by their own games studio: a multiplayer sandbox world, a MOBA-ish 4v4 mythological murdersport, and some sort of class-based Battle Royale 'em up. That sandbox 'em up sounds like it might be interesting, at least. As Amazon also owns Twitch, all three games have bits to entertain livestream viewers or let them fiddle with what's going on. Let's look at New World, Breakaway [official site], and Crucible in decreasing order of interestingness.
