I was looking for an excuse to return to roguelike FPS Mothergunship, and today's free "Namengineers" update looks like a fine reason, adding a little more of everything. When I reviewed it in July, I thought it was technically impressive but still a little under-baked, with too few environments, enemy types and an oft-frustrating economy. Looking at the patch notes for today's update, Grip Digital claim to improved on all that, tightening its gun-crafting systems and adding a new playmode encouraging building very big, daft guns. Below, a brief peek at a new environment type.
]]>Mothergunship is about big, stupid, hand-crafted guns and exploding robots. Successor to Terrible Posture Games' Tower of Guns and co-developed by Czech studio Grip Digital. It's a roguelike-ish "Bullet Hell" FPS about raiding procedurally generated alien spaceships, hoarding gun-barrels and bolting them onto your remarkably agile power armour. A denser game than its predecessor, its complex systems are dressed up in breezy, comedic style, but its many turning gears grind against each other far too often.
]]>Some shooters offer military precision. Some shooters deliver technical movement systems. Roguelike shooter Mothergunship (pseudo-sequel to Tower of Guns) doesn't care about that. What it does do is let you build a twelve-barrelled shotgun so enormously scattershot that it hits absolutely everything in the room, and if you somehow manage to miss anything on the first pass, the pellets ricochet, just to be sure. It's also out in less than three weeks. Within, a shiny new launch-date trailer featuring a multitude of exceedingly impractical firearms, plus a demo.
]]>"Give the guy a gun and he's Superman," Humpty Dumpty said. "Give him two and he's God." I'd like to add to this, "Give 'em five guns stacked up and clicked together into one huge megagun, and they may well be playing Mothergunship."
That's the next bullet hell first-person shooter from the creator of 2014's Tower Of Guns, and this time it'll have players build our own guns. A bit like Serious Sam: Double D, we snap bits and bobs into honking great guns covering half the screen. You can see quite how that works in the 'Gun Crafting Range' demo released today.
]]>The creator of frenetic FPS Tower of Guns has announced a new procedurally-generated shoot-o-rama, Mothergunship [official site]. It'll bring more bullet hell action against hordes of enemies and honking great bosses, and this time you'll get to build your own guns too. Players will be able to craft megaweapons, snapping together bits from a huge selection which, I'm told, even includes a fish tank.
Here, check out this wild first-person bullet hell in the announcement trailer:
