Modding Resident Evil with Thomas the Tank Engine in place of Mr. X/Lady Dimitrescu/Nemesis/the monster of your choosing is so much a tradition at this point that Capcom may as well set the inevitable Resident Evil Zero remake aboard the interior of the chirpy children’s TV character. While players might be having fun modding Thomas, Shrek and Barney the Dinosaur into its survival-horror series, Capcom has expressed concern that some mods may cause "reputational damage" to the company and their games.
]]>I expect the life of the average person in ninth-century England was a lot tougher than the fantastical future full of video games we inhabit more than a millennium later. Well, Ubisoft and Capcom have teamed up to make the lives of digital peasants even harder, by shoving some Monster Hunter World themed gubbins into Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. Have a watch of the trailer below to see just how bizarre this crossover is.
]]>Last time, you decided that a really big unreal place is better than going undercover. Good. Very good. Great deciding, reader dear. I'm wholly impartial, of course, but I am glad you haven't forced me to come up with some contrived reason to jam a really big unreal place back into the running. We can continue. This week, it's a question of jarring vs. juicy. What's better: physics freakouts or beautiful food?
]]>The house cat. Felis destructus. Humankind's absolute best mate and undisputed master. Some upcoming video games are planning to examine the motives behind these enigmatic creatures, whose origins remain unknown. Stray will put you in the paws of a street cat finding their way home in a cyberpunk city. Little Kitty Big City will see you wearing the whiskers of a cat less concerned with going home than it is with wreaking urban havoc. But what if you don't want to wait for these games? Well, you have options. Here are 10 of the best cats in PC games.
]]>I fell off Monster Hunter: World a bit. I'm not really sure why, I think it's just because other games came out and I got swept up in them instead. But now I want to go back, but not really for the hunting or the exploring or the monsters. No, it's all about the hammer for me.
]]>Monster Hunter Rise isn't due to arrive on PC until early next year, but I've been playing the Switch version over the last week after getting the game for my birthday - and I actually can't stop. Over the last couple of weeks, I've been slicing up its oversized lizards with my beloved Dual Blades like nobody's business, gutting their scales, pelts, fangs and goodness knows what else to make even stronger pairs of dino pants so I can get back out there and take on ever-larger beasties and make ever more fashionable trousers. It's a familiar rhythm to Monster Hunter games of yore, but there's something about Rise that's kept me hooked far longer than my jaunts in previous MonHan games, including PC mega hit Monster Hunter: World. And I think it's partly down to my new dog friends, the Palamutes.
]]>Now, we won't be seeing Paul W.S. Anderson's Monster Hunter flick in the west for a good few months yet. But the adaptation's Chinese debut this week saw it face a massive backlash over one racist scene in particular, a backlash that has since spilled over into Monster Hunter: World's Steam reviews and pushed series creators Capcom to distance themselves from the film's production.
]]>A Monster Hunter movie from the director of Resident Evil could never actually be like Monster Hunter the game... unless Capcom made the game like the movie. Which they are. They've announced a crossover event between Monster Hunter World: Iceborne and the upcoming movie, where we'll get to play as Milla Jovovich's character from the Paul W. S. Anderson flick and earn her armour for keepsies. They've even got Milla to voice her character in these new singleplayer quests.
]]>Whether you prefer wizards, sword-and-board warriors, the irradiated wasteland, vampires, or isometric text-heavy stories, the RPG is the genre that will never let you down. Accross the dizzing number of games available where you can play a role, there's something for everyone - and we've tried to reflect that in our list of the best RPGs on PC. The past couple of years have been great for RPGs, so there are some absolute classics as well as brand spanking new games on this list. And there's more to look forwards to, with rumblings of Dragon Age: Dread Wolf finally on the horizon, and space epic Starfield in our rear view mirror. Whatever else may happen, though, this list will provide you with the 50 best RPGs that you can download and play on PC right now.
]]>The fifth and final free title update for Monster Hunter World: Iceborne will arrive on the 1st of October, Capcom have announced, adding one last megamonster to mash. The big, bad, black dragon Fatalis is coming back, complete with the ruined castle where it's historically fought in Monster Hunter. Yes, absolutely you'll be able to turn Fatalis into a fetching jacket. You'll also be able to dress your Palico as Fatalis, and the little catfriend jogging around a big doofy dragon costume does look delightful.
]]>Following a customary Covid-19 delay, Capcom have announced that Monster Hunter World: Iceborne's next big content update will launch on July 9th. Title Update 4 will let us hunt Alatreon, the elder dragon introduced back in Monster Hunter 3. Yes, of course, you'll get to turn this dragon into shoes and swords. Come meet the frightful beast in the trailer below.
]]>Have you exhausted your Steam library? Okay, let me rephrase that: have you run out of things you’re excited to play in your Steam library? Well, if you’re a fan of Capcom games, then the latest discounts from Fanatical are well worth a look, with Resident Evil 2, Devil May Cry 5 and Monster Hunter: World's Iceborne Master Edition all going cheap today.
]]>Everyone’s a cook now, is that it? A few weeks in lockdown and you’re all suddenly artisan bakers and Bon Appétit Kitchen presenters? Sorry, I don’t buy it. Put the chickpeas down, Jeff. We all know what happens when you let things “simmer”. However, there is a world in which your cooking really does impress. Where it comes out of the pot scrumptious and hot and more flavourful than a generous bite from a big round onion. That world is videogames. Did you think I was going to say something else? I never say anything else. It’s videogames. Here are the 9 most delicious dinners in videogames.
]]>We're almost at the end of the Monster Hunter: World roadmap. Oh, that doesn't mean Capcom's beastie-basher is coming to an end - it just means we're completely clueless as to what happens from June onwards. There's one last nasty to get through before we enter the unknown, though. In May, Capcom are bringing the cataclysmic elder dragon Alatreon back to Monster Hunter in a free update.
]]>Today the seasoned killers of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne kick in the doors to a new region of the world and promptly set about turning its residents into new hats and jackets. The free update opens the Tundra region of the Guiding Lands and adds two new monsters, Safi'jiiva and Stygian Zinogre. That's one red dragon and one electric lizard dog, ready to be sewn into slippers. Come meet them!
]]>We're all sick of the cold at this point, right? You've all trekked through Iceborne in your oversized snowshoes and whatnot and we're ready for something different? Great, because Monster Hunter: World is getting two monster variants on PC in April and they're going to melt the boots right off you. The third free "title update" for MWH is the last that will have a staggered release between PC and console players. In April, both versions of the game will pair up for updates going forward.
]]>Everyone loves a good action game. It's the driving force behind so many of our favourite PC games, but only a few can lay claim to being the best action games of all time. That's why we've compiled this list - to sort the pulled punches from the bestest biffs that PC has to offer. Whether it's the joy of pulling off a perfect combo, riding the wave of an explosive set-piece or the hair-raising thrill of dodging enemy attacks in slow-motion that gets you going, there's an action game here for you.
]]>Darkness falls across the land, the midnight hour is close at hand. An unseasonable scare has descended upon Monster Hunter: World. Yes, this month's free Iceborne update adds a honking great new monster to slay, the beefy horned Rajang. But it also heralds the arrival of an undead plague upon the land. The Raccoon City Collaboration has commenced, bringing Resident Evil 2's hordes and heroes to the deadly safari until March 6th.
]]>At launch, the big, snowy expansion to giant creature game Monster Hunter: World had more than its fair share of problems. Some players had their MHW save files deleted. Others experienced drastic performance problems. Save some issues for the rest of the class, Iceborne. Two weeks ago, Capcom notified players of a planned patch to fix these problems. That patch is out now, they say.
]]>There are loads of big beasties to hunt in Monster Hunter World Iceborne and all of them can be harvested for ingredients to make the brand new Master Rank weapons. With so many introduced, it can be daunting to know which ones to make and what ingredients you need to create your new tools. You've come to the right place then, as this guide has all you'll ever need to know about the weapons in Monster Hunter World Iceborne.
]]>I absolutely love the practical, physical space parts of game development. Foley recording sessions are fascinating, as is watching motion capture actors. It's cooler yet when actors aren't playing humans, which is why this video of Monster Hunter: World's motion capture is wonderful and hilarious. An actor is suited up star in a fight scene as the giant, horned gorilla monster Rajang.
]]>Slashing through Monster Hunter: World on PC has always meant dealing with delays. Capcom's dino-basher launched on Steam over six months after its console debut in 2018, while we similarly had to wait four months before we getting our mitts on the brilliant Iceborne expansion. But Capcom reckon PC players have been pulling up the rear for too long, announcing full platform parity and the return of a "fan-favourite" beastie in a new content roadmap posted this weekend.
]]>Monster Hunter World: Iceborne had a rocky release last week, with reports coming in that when PC players were jumping into the expansion there was a chance the game might delete their save files. This, paired with general performance issues, is obviously a very bad way for DLC to start its life on a new platform, but Capcom have announced that fixes are on the way.
Yesterday, they published some patch pre-release info, reassuring us that the fixes will be released "in the coming days" - but warning players to be careful with their save data in the meantime.
]]>It's perhaps unsurprising that the new monsters in Monster Hunter World Iceborne yield brand new parts to combine into the brand new Master Rank armor. Every single monster, including the old ones, have new parts that you can mix and match to make some decent equipment. But which ones should you be creating and are there any sets that are essential?
]]>Now that Monster Hunter World Iceborne is out on PC, at long last, there is a new cast of monsters to hunt. They range from big woolly beasts to intimidating elder dragons that have fresh ways to dish out the damage. There are also some returning favourites from the previous games in the series that the PC never got, such as Tigrex or Nargacuga, only they now have added tweaks to make them more challenging in Monster Hunter World Iceborne.
]]>If it wasn't for the fact that Tigrex has ridiculously low stamina, it would perhaps be one of the hardest monsters to fight in Monster Hunter World Iceborne. Regardless of how tired it is, the Tigrex can still give hunters a few problems with its unorthodox attack patterns, as well as some weaknesses that are far from obvious.
]]>Monster Hunter: World is one of the biggest games on PC right now, and it's just got even bigger with the launch of its giant Iceborne expansion. So, if you're been thinking about jumping into Capcom's dinosaur-hunting / hat-making sim, but aren't sure if your graphics card can run it properly, then have a read of my Monster Hunter: World PC performance guide below.
]]>The new Iceborne expansion for Monster Hunter: World launched on PC yesterday. For players who are running the new campaign without issue, RPS' Iceborne review calls it one of the "bestest bests." For others, save file issues and performance problems might make for a frigid first experience. Make sure to back up your MH:W save files because there's a chance Iceborne or the simultaneous game update could delete them.
]]>I have spent the winter holidays making a list, checking it twice, trying to find who is naughty on ice. But unlike the popular red-clad demon of the north, my list is reserved for terrors, demons and critters larger than 4 feet tall. I’m talking about cold monsters. They’re very chic this week. You see, while Nic has been battering majestic species of endangered giganto-moose in our Monster Hunter World: Iceborne review, I have been working hard to catalogue the frostiest freaks this side of video gaming. Here you go, the 8 coldest monsters in PC games.
]]>A chill wind blows today, carrying the distinct scent of dinosaur dung. Monster Hunter: World has just launched its Iceborne expansion on PC, sending hunters to icy new lands to fight tough new monsters (and tougher versions of old monsters). We're arriving late as Iceborne hit consoles in September 2019, though here the PC delay means I'm getting a more authentic and holistic experience because my flat is chuffing freezing. Take that, console launch!
]]>Look, there are a lot of silly designs in Monster Hunter World Iceborne, but I still think that this hench lad with a rockabilly mohawk takes the biscuit. Brachydios doesn't just wear that protruding thing on his bonce for show though, as secreted within is an explosive slime that it uses to coat its fists, before pummelling the ground like a toddler having a massive tantrum. This monster might give unfamiliar hunters a bit of an issue.
]]>Those familiar with Monster Hunter will know that Nargacuga is a returning creature in Monster Hunter World Iceborne. Its bat-like features make it one of the more striking looking monsters. It also has a really bad temper and has a rather edgy way of showing just how bad tempered it is, by lighting up its red eye shadow.
]]>Perhaps your first real challenge in Monster Hunter World Iceborne is the frosty savage itself - Barioth. On top of just being a really, really fast, it has some rather brutal melee attacks and ice tornado projectiles that can easily overwhelm you. Preparation is key to winning this fight and it is possible to beat it.
]]>I always thought the Pukei-Pukei was a monster that didn't live up to its potential, but Monster Hunter World Iceborne's Coral Pukei-Pukei only served to highlight just how dangerous it could have been even further. Its tail can eject gallons of water in a jet stream. This makes the Coral Pukei-Pukei different enough to warrant needing its own strategies to defeat it.
]]>How do you make one of the more annoying large monsters from the main game more annoying in Monster Hunter World Iceborne? How about giving it a sleep inducing gas that it can waft around like a bad smell. It makes Paolumu's hard-hitting, but otherwise very avoidable attacks a lot more dangerous. But as long as you avoid the gas clouds, you should be fine.
]]>The original Tobi-Kadachi was one of the first monsters you faced in Monster Hunter World, but Iceborne has the Viper Tobi-Kadachi. It differs from its purely lightning cousin in its more reptilian appearance. It can also inflict one of three different status ailments that can easily put you in a vulnerable position.
]]>The first monster that Capcom showed us for Monster Hunter World Iceborne was the Banbaro - a stag-like wyvern that is generally quite peaceful. However, if you cross it, it will use its antlers to scoop up boulders and trees to charge at you relentlessly. Banbaro can therefore be a bit of a handful to hunt if you're going in unprepared.
]]>Your first foray into the frozen wilds of Monster Hunter World: Iceborne will pit you up against the Beotodus. Think of this ice fish as the more aggressive version of Jyuratodus, as it has some very powerful strikes that inflict the nasty Iceblight status ailment. If you're struggling to hunt Beotodus, or are a bit rusty to hunting monsters, this guide will get you up to speed.
]]>Monster Hunter World's first big expansion takes hunters to the rather chilly land of Hoarfrost Reach. The new stuff isn't just limited to what you discover in the frozen tundra, as Iceborne includes new monsters to hunt in familiar and new locations, as well as new techniques and Master Rank equipment. There's a ton more besides this and we'll be going through as much as we can.
]]>Glavenus is yet another returning monster for Monster Hunter World Iceborne, and this one is rather unique. The main gimmick here is that Glavenus likes to use its massive tail like a cleaver, igniting it for extra power, and burning anything it touches. It also has a short temper and will frequently become enraged, making its attacks deadlier.
]]>With the expansion to Monster Hunter World finally being released on PC, there's no better time to jump into the vast world of Monster Hunter World than right now! Even if you're delving into the main game without looking at the new expansion - Iceborne - there is plenty to do in this complicated game.
]]>First things first: you need to be Hunter Rank 16 to access Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, which basically means you need to have beaten the base game’s final story boss before you pick it up. I know this is an incredibly dry way to start, but I asked myself what the first thing I’d hope to learn from an Iceborne review would be, and that was it. So there you are. Never say I am not here for you.
Right, then, let’s try again. For the uninitiated: Monster Hunter World is a third-person boss-rush game, styled as a shounen anime nature documentary about komodo dragons the size of buses. You hunt a big lizard over one of several open-ish world maps, kill it, turn it into a pair of studded jorts and a giant bone hammer, and then use them to kill a bigger lizard. In this fashion, you work your way up the food chain from dreadlocked iguanas to majestic, deadly dragons. You can do it solo with an adorable cat companion called a Palico, or you can do it online with up to three other players, tooled up with complimentary builds like in an MMO raid. It’s exceptionally beautiful and enormously deep - and it’s silly amounts of fun, so long as you don’t think too hard about what it's saying about the relationship between humans and nature. I reviewed it here.
]]>There is nothing worse for a world-leading chartologist (PhD) like me than a Steam sale. All sense is lost, all decorum thrown to the wind, as the same few games come stamping all over everything like an uninvited six year old whose parents let him go to bed whenever he wants. And we're entering Sale Season, people. It's going to get stampy.
]]>HDR on PC hasn't improved much in 2019. Despite there being more HDR gaming monitors than ever before, the very best gaming monitors for HDR continue to be quite expensive compared to non-HDR monitors, and the situation around Windows 10 support for it is still a bit of a mess. However, provided you're willing to fight through all that, then the next step on your path to high dynamic range glory is to get an HDR compatible graphics card.
Below, you'll find a complete list of all the Nvidia and AMD graphics cards that have built-in support for HDR, as well as everything you need to know about getting one that also supports Nvidia and AMD's own HDR standards, G-Sync Ultimate and FreeSync 2. I've also put together a list of all the PC games that support HDR as well, so you know exactly which PC games you can start playing in high dynamic range.
]]>The Schwarzschild radius of the Steam Charts continues to shrink as the effects of the Universal Collapse take greater impact on our daily lives.
Read on if you want to know how to protect your family from complete atomic devastation.
]]>We now know when Monster Hunter World: Iceborne will be coming to PC and I'll be honest, it's a little earlier than I was expecting it to be. A post-holiday treat if you will, to tie us over until more big releases grace our screens. Here's everything you need to know about Monster Hunter World: Iceborne on PC.
]]>Pack your thermals: Monster Hunter: World's Iceborne expansion now has a PC release date of January 9th, 2020. While console Monster Hunters got Iceborne at the tail end of summer in September, when the frozen land of Hoarfrost Reach might have offered welcome respite from the searing sun, it'll be proper cold all-round for us. Ice in the outside world, ice in your recreation. I'm sure some of the fights against honking great new monsters will warm your blood up, mind. You can see more of those beasts in the new PC trailer below.
]]>What’s Another Thing You Could Buy Instead Of GTA V Again?
]]>We've had a few people asking how to get these stupid annoying articles out of the news feed for their favourite games on Steam. Read on to learn more...
]]>Why, what's this? Oh I say, a Steam Charts you say? How intriguing.
]]>Hi, it's me! Yeah! No, nothing's wrong, all's good. I was just calling to see if you wanted some Steam Charts? ... STEAM CHARTS ... Yeah, that's right. No, no it's not. You don't? Oh, um, I already sent them over.
]]>Hello, I'm high school sweetheart, John Walker. Welcome, if you can, to Steam Charts.
]]>It’s International Cat Day! You know, one of those days reportedly invented by a charity, spread by the internet without question, and propagated by the scoundrel media because quite simply we are desperate to post pictures of cats, big cats, fluffy cats, kitten cats, any cat, any excuse for any cat, please, just let me have this day, please, I don't care if it's a fake day, please, I need this.
Here are some good videogame cats for International Cat Day.
]]>If you had hoped to cuddle up with a blanket, cocoa, and Palico this Christmas in Monster Hunter: World's Iceborne expansion, bad news: it won't be out on PC by then. Capcom yesterday narrowed our "winter" release window down to "January 2020". Iceborne's console launch will be on September 6th so pllllrbbb. This is a shorter delay than we waited for the base game's PC release, four months rather than six, but it's still on the disappointing side of the Christmas holidays.
]]>It's another dire old week in Chartland, with the last breaths of the Summer Sale ensuring, with the exception of spots #4 and #5, that all the usual suspects dominate. But we won't let that change us! We're better than this! We're going to have fun anyway!
]]>You need some downtime when you’re huntering monsterers. You need to take the time to wash the Jagras bile out your hair, to trim your Palico's claws, and to talk to your fellow hunterererers about the Gajau that got away. Capcom has realised that, because the incoming expansion, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, has group baths, saunas, and more monsters as well. Videos below.
]]>Yes, yes, it's me. I know, I know, but calm down. While it's obviously very exciting to have a celebrity as handsome and excellent as me writing you some Steam Charts, I'm still just a regular ordinary guy underneath it all. I leap into my trousers both legs at once, same as anyone else.
]]>“I do remember there being some pretty bad cat puns that we all wish we could unhear," Marco Bombasi tells me. He’s the localisation director for Monster Hunter: World, the man in charge of translating the dinosaur-harvesting game from its original Japanese into other languages, including English. Every player in Monster Hunter gets a cat sidekick who says things like “Hello Meow-ster”, so I’ve asked Bombasi if writing the game's ubiquitous cat punnage ever produced wordplay so heinous it managed to give the team paws for thought. He says yes, it got bad.
“So bad, in fact, that our editor and resident cat pun professional, David, had to write a rulebook on acceptable usage.”
]]>If there's one thing that's guaranteed to sweep through the Steam Charts like a giant fart, it's a Steam Sale. Blowing out all the fresh, original or interesting new releases, the mid-year discount warehouse (Junction 45 off the M91) ensures it's a top 10 of games you already bought or decided you don't want to buy.
So who is buying them? Baddies. You lot are the goodies. It's the baddies who do this to us.
]]>Have you ever seen a Banbaro? Oh, you sheltered child of reality. They are quite lovely creatures. Banbaros are large herbivorous snowbeasts with big, chunky antlers, presumably used for bickering and clashing with other Banboys down at the Banbar on a Friday. Bantlers. Ignore my jokes, they’re beautiful creatures. Serene, tranquil, perfectly at home in the cold ecology of their glittering wintry domain. I murdered one this afternoon.
]]>Trying to keep up with E3 2019 is a fool's errand, and the foaming river of content streaming down the internet's face doesn't always make it easier. So here's a round-up of every news story from the show we think matters to you, with links to our full stories (and bantful liveblogs) where relevant. We'll be updating this hourly, so keep coming back.
]]>Monster Hunter: World has a couple of crossover events, but the most ambitious puts us in the shoes of Geralt of Rivia as he hunts down the monster that transported him and a Nekker to the forest. This turns out to be the Leshen who has taken up residence in the Ancient Forest and disturbed the natural order. You'll therefore need to put it down.
Those new to hunting monsters, or if you just need to find a particular monster guide to get up to Hunter Rank 16 - needed to start this quest - should head over to our Monster Hunter World guide hub for a plethora of guides.
]]>Encouraging LARPing, Capcom have announced that Monster Hunter: World's icy Iceborne expansion won't arrive on PC until we're already wrapped up in scarves and mittens, coming our way this winter after a console debut in September. Yes, it is unfortunate that our version is still lagging behind, but isn't it fitting to be exploring an icy island while huddling around your PC for warmth? That's more IMMERSIVE than any light-up keyboard. Capcom blasted a load of details and videos about the expansion last night, including a look at a beastie swimming through snow with its horn poking out like a shark's fin. Nope!
]]>Ol' Geralt has gone tumbling through another magical portal, this time travelling from the world of The Witcher 3 to Monster Hunter: World. The crossover event lets us play as Geralt to track and murder a Witcher monster, the leshen treeman, with his usual Witching ways. Do so and you can get his armour and sword, plus a gruesome outfit for your Palico catfriend. A second, tougher part of the crossover starring Ciri will follow later this month with her gear as rewards, but only for a few weeks.
]]>OK, two things on the agenda. Firstly, I'm heading off on my expedition to attempt to break the Curse Of Steam Charts for the next couple of weeks. I'm returning to Ursidae, Caniformia, to find that ancient temple once more and attempt to appease the enraged spirit of Horace. Hopefully we'll never speak again!
Secondly, Toby's back! This week's Steam Charts are brought to you through the filter of a four year old who was really excited about doing this again, but then got into a right grump about it as soon as we started. But his naming skills remain as excellent as ever.
]]>Haha, that was funny last week wasn't it! Remember how we did that whole bit where I had left RPS, but then I was still stuck writing Steam Charts? Heh, they do some good goofs at this site. Anyway, let's... [looks straight into camera]
]]>After months of lazing around on consoles, Geralt Of Rivia is finally stumbling through the portal to Monster Hunter: World on PC. Capcom have picked May 9th for the debut of this impressively well fleshed-out crossover. It features a fully voiced, branching story mission where you get to play as everyone's favourite grumpy monster-slayer from The Witcher series, a new monster (plus one variant) from that world. There's also a trio of big perks to grind for. Dedicated hunters can permanently unlock Geralt, Ciri and horrible Nekkers to fight, or capture to swap your Palico for.
]]>As this is my penultimate edition of Steam Charts, before I return to nuzzle into the warm infinite belly of Horace for all of time, I thought it might be fun to take a bit of a look behind the scenes of Steam Charts, to see how this weekly column comes together.
So, hey, join me as we step behind the curtain, and learn a little bit about the magic of Rock Paper Shotgun.
]]>Dragon-botherers with a few gigabytes of space and VRAM spare get to see Monster Hunter: World's land of angry lizard-hurting in sharper focus today. Capcom have rolled out an update for the game, along with a free, optional high-res texture pack that more than doubles the game's installation size. It's a hefty thirty gigabyte download and will happily wolf down six gigabytes of VRAM (though it recommends having eight), but it does make the game's many suits of ornate armour look cleaner and shinier. It thankfully has a negligible impact on in-game performance.
]]>Capcom are laying a common grumble about Monster Hunter: World on PC to rest in a couple weeks, with the release of an optional HD texture pack. While the PC version of the game is the smoothest, nicest-looking way to play the enormous boss rush, eagle-eyed folks noticed that many textures in the PC release were slightly fuzzier up close than their console equivalents. Not a huge difference, but it was still visible. Capcom smoothed out some of this in last October's update for the game, but will soon offer players with extra space and VRAM the option to crank everything up further.
]]>The game you like isn't as good as the game I like. When you like the game you like, you are made to look a fool!
Find out why in this week's Steam Charts.
]]>I took it for granted. I knew I shouldn't, I think I even knew I was doing it at the time. But last week, when the charts were filled with new and interesting games, pushing out the tired and bloated titles, I didn't take the time to recognise what we had. And now, as can only be the direct responsibility of my careless credulity, everything has fallen apart.
This week's charts are the worst I've ever seen. And I'm sorry. I'm... look, I'm just sorry.
]]>While last year's Steam Awards were just a poll on the store, Valve are stepping up their game this year. Starting in a few minutes (at the time of writing) is the Steam Awards 2018 show, broadcasting live on the company's own Steam TV site. While I doubt there'll be anything as surprising as Epic's coup at the Game Awards before the holidays, there's still a chance for unexpected announcements in there, plus I'm curious just how fancy the show will be. Tune in here on Steam TV - the show starts soon. Below, a reminder of the categories and the nominees in the running.
Update: Show's over, and honestly I'm a bit underwhelmed, even starting with low expectations. No surprises, no human faces, no pageantry. Barely any time to breathe, even. The show began immediately with the awards and hammered through them in under twenty minutes. At least each of the winning studios recorded a little award acceptance clip - that was nice. You can see a recording of the show on the Steam Awards page here.
]]>Once bitten, twice shy, is not a good aphorism for zombies. They're not very shy at all. In fact, some of them are positively bold. They've wreaked havoc with this week's Steam Charts, taking over nearly half the entries. Which, admittedly, saves me thinking up a bunch of other stupid shit to write.
Yes, click through, read on, for the bunch of stupid shit I did write.
]]>Everybody knows man was the real monster all along. We can't do tail-whips though, so we're not nearly as fun to fight. Modder "UberGrainy" has instead plopped the xenomorph queen from Aliens into Monster Hunter: World, letting you go toe to toe with the double-mouthed mother of fear.
]]>Monster Hunter: World is going big (well, wide) with its first major update of 2019. As of today, players will be able to make the most of their flashy, Ultrawide monitors as the update adds 21:9 support, a push-to-talk function, and various other features and bug fixes.
]]>Don't be scared. It's OK. I've got you. Hold my hand. Tighter. Come on. We can do this together. You and me. Lets... Steam Chart.
]]>A lot of people first discover this Pulitzer Prize-winning* column via the Steam pages for their favourite games, and it's always a pleasure to welcome in new readers to RPS's most respected feature. So if you're new, welcome! Please settle in and find out why Steam Charts is the industry's most respected and revered games journalism.
]]>Ho ho ho! John still hasn't returned after Christmas, missing presumed drowned in egg nog, so I'm filling in today. Valve have already blarbed about 2018's best-selling games so we're back on the weekly charts. Last week's top ten was largely familiar, though catching the tail end of the Steam Winter Sale has introduced a few surprises.
]]>The doors have been opened, the games inside have been devoured, and now it's time to recycle the cardboard. Below you'll find all of our favourite games from 2018, gathered together in a single post for easy reading.
]]>I’ve spent 2018 particularly distracted, flitting between games and feeling guilty that I haven’t quite finished them or spent the time they deserved. Maybe it’s because there have been so many good games? Or maybe I’m just awful. Either way, I resolve to take better care next year.
Now I look back, I realise that I’ve particularly enjoyed a series of games which gave me space to explore them on my own terms. Whether on the scale of giant monsters or the confined scale of the decks of a ship, they’ve all felt expansive and generous, and respectful of me as a player.
Also, it’s always hard to figure out a five, so shoutouts to Forza Horizon 4, Donut County, Far: Lone Sails and Total War: Warhammer 2’s pirate vampires.
]]>It’s well known that games are an awful mistake that should have never been unleashed on an unsuspecting humanity. That said, here’s five that hushed the howling primates that reside in my skull just long enough for me to consider them a worthwhile investment.
Honorable mentions go to Cultist Simulator (For it’s alchemical harmony of theme and mechanics), Vermintide 2 (for being the second best Lord of the Rings game ever made) and Prey: Mooncrash (For being more Prey). Not in order of goodness:
]]>Monster Hunter: World has seen a fair number of collaborations, the latest one on PC will be between Capcom and Square Enix. The Behemoth update comes with some new armour, emotes, references to Final Fantasy, and a new Elder Dragon in the form of Behemoth. While not a siege battle like Kulve Taroth, this creature is perhaps the toughest single monster that you can kill in Monster Hunter: World to date. This will be a permanent addition for the game, with an extreme version used for limited time events, so you'll need to know how to kill this hulking giant. This guide will go over the strengths and weaknesses, as well as all these interactions that you should be aware of going in, while of course keeping your distance.
]]>Hey, remember the good old days? Those giddy times I like to think of as last week? When the Charts felt fresh and new, filled with potential, as if any interesting game could take a top spot? Well, forget all that because it's all gone to shit again.
]]>In a monster-sized newsblast, Capcom have announced that Monster Hunter: World will next year receive a full expansion named Iceborne, a crossover that brings Geralt from The Witcher to Monster Hunter with new quests, and new mega-tough versions of some nasty raid beasties. A demo is coming this week too. Busy times in Monsterland. Mostly I'm excited to see Geralt encounter Palico catpals. Please give Geralt a Palico.
]]>I don't what is this? How many? Are we sure we're in the right charts? This is definitely the Steam Charts, where the mad-brained broken people just buy the same four games over and over and over? Because something is up. People have only bought the same three games over and over!
]]>I, Alice Bee, have returned from a week off and everything has changed. Matt is in the office now, and complained about having to get up at 8.15am. This complaint made me furious and I am telling everyone. My desk has been moved. There is no milk in the fridge. I am confused, and I can't remember all the HTML codes to write this very post. It's going to take ages. The new world is terrifying. But we always have the Steam Charts, even when John is away on his holidays.
]]>Ho ho ho! Merry Monsterchristmas! 'tis the season for those most seasonal of events, and Monster Hunter: World looks holly-jolly in its new event. The Winter Star Fest brings warm winter wear, a festive fondue, and cute snowman outfits for your palico catpal. Older seasonal hunts have returned too, so you can treat yourself to something nice (albeit still warm and dripping with the monster's blood) this Christmas.
]]>Yet another monster has been introduced to Monster Hunter: World, and this time it is other half of the Elder Dragon power couple - Lunastra. This azure variant on Teostra is more powerful, more prone to erupting into a fiery inferno, and its blue flame patches can have some utterly bizarre interactions with other Elder Dragon attacks. This guide will go over the strengths and weaknesses, as well as all these interactions that you should be aware of going in, while of course keeping your distance.
]]>Beep boop. I am the SteamChartBot, and welcome to the CYBERCHARTS. They're like the regular charts, but they have the word "CYBER" shouted at the start, and that makes them really bloody cool.
]]>Don't let the blue sparkles and cool demeanour fool you - Monster Hunter: World's next permanent addition, Lunastra, is even more fiery than her mate Teostra. Announced today, this new dragon will be coming to Monster Hunter: World on Thursday, November 22nd. Unlike the last update, which gave us a time-limited (though due to reoccur) battle against Kulve Talvoth, she'll be a new and constant threat, and frequently paired with her other half, opening up new and powerful tag-team attacks for the duo. Below, the original console trailer for this blue meanie.
]]>Deep within the Caverns of El Dorado in Monster Hunter: World lies the golden Elder Dragon known as Kulve Taroth. You won't be able to kill this massive beast, but you will be able to knock off all of its shards which can be crafted into all sorts of wonderfully sparkling armour. It's also the first monster that requires four groups of four warriors, which means you'll need to work together to take it down through multiple phases. This guide will go over how to fight the Kulve Taroth, as well as all the materials that can be gathered from it.
]]>One of the megabig monsters only seen in Monster Hunter: World events on consoles so far will make her PC debut this weekend, bringing the fleeting opportunity to hack the elder dragon Kulve Taroth into pieces then forge her golden scales and horns into weapons and armour. A patch hit MHW yesterday to lay the groundwork for the event, and it'll all kick off at midnight on Friday. It'll be a tough battle, but the rewards are certainly shiny. You don't want to turn up to monster prom wrapped in rotting guts while the other hunters are clad in golden plate and horns, do you?
]]>We go from one dragon-like monster to another one in our Monster Hunter: World guides, as our hero's journey back to the Rotten Vale is impeded by a roaming Legiana getting in the way of your flight path. This chilly customer is a master of all things ice, able to reduce your stamina recovery and leave you vulnerable to its fast swoops. As easily the hardest monster that you fight at this stage of the game in the Coral Highlands, this guide will go over what how to kill it, what its weakness is, and the things you need to be aware of when fighting this dragon.
]]>A lot of the larger monsters in Monster Hunter: World are required to have been hunted to complete the main story, but there's a few that are optional fights. One of these just so happens to be a Rathian, which can be a nuisance to early-game hunts in the Ancient Forest or Wildspire Waste, but is worth going after to prepare for a later fight, as well as to obtain materials for some really good equipment. This guide will go over what how to kill it, what its weakness is, and the things you need to be aware of when fighting this dragon.
]]>Your first venture into Monster Hunter: World's Rotten Vale is fraught with danger. No sooner than you arrive that you find not one, but two large monsters. The one you'll be fighting though is the more intimidating of the two. Radobaan is a hulking pile of bones that can roll around with careless abandon for your safety. That said, it's only got a couple of tricks in its arsenal. In order to avoid becoming roadkill, this guide will go over what how to kill it, what its weakness is, and just how to dodge it when it rolls around.
]]>Very few monsters in Monster Hunter: World could ever be described as "cute". In fact, I wouldn't even describe the bloated puffball known as Paolumu as such. It's a deceptively challenging fight too as this is a flying creature capable of some rather hard-hitting attacks if you're not careful. This guide will go over what how to kill it, what its weakness is, and what to watch out for when it puffs up.
]]>Upon arriving in the third main location of Monster Hunter: World, you'll likely be dazzled at just how different it is compared to the forests and deserts that came before it. This is all before you encounter the Tzitzi-Ya-Ku, the first larger monster you'll see along the way to building a new camp. Well, larger may be over exaggerating a bit as it's by far the smallest one you'll face in the game. This guide will go over what how to kill it, what its weaknesses are, and how to avoid its flash.
]]>Upon defeating a massive T-Rex in Monster Hunter: World, the hunters are finally ready to try and capture the main big Elder Dragon - Zorah Magdaros. A plan was put into place where the hunters will initially try to stun it by using cannons and ballistae, before ensnaring it. Unlike the other encounters you have had so far, this is more of an elaborate boss battle that happens over multiple phases. It is possible to lose this fight, so this guide will go through each step to try and ensure you don't perish during this mission.
]]>There comes a point in Monster Hunter: World where you'll start to want to bring in other players to defeat monsters as a group, rather than try to kill them on your own. For some, this point will be the Anjanath - a T-Rex with a big snout. While it is entirely possible to defeat this dinosaur without friends, the first time may be a bit on the tricky side without them. This guide will go over its weaknesses, how to avoid its various attacks - particularly its enraged ones, and ultimately how to kill it.
