Futuremark Games Studio, whose last outing was the well-received by largely unplayed Shattered Horizon, have announced that they are making three new MYSTERY games. They tell us: "you can tag this under PC, XBLA and iOS. We will leave it to your readers to guess which platforms apply to each game (there are only 343 possible combinations)."
Hmm! Let's see whether we can guess from the trailer, which is below. (I think it's actually pretty obvious.)
]]>UPDATE: This is now available on the Steam version of the game, and will update automatically.
]]>Well, only two multiplayer games, but they are games. One is zero-G astronaut battler (with excellent space furniture), Shattered Horizon, and the other is slightly wonky Wild West shoot 'em up Lead & Gold: Gangs Of The Wild West. They're temporarily free to play on Steam over the weekend, with a large discount for actual permanent purchase if the freeness persuades you of long-term appeal.
]]>That's this coming weekend, the 4th-6th. There's a reason why I am pimping this one, however, which is that lots of people were interested by our recent examination of Shattered Horizon's maps and weapons updates, and this provides you an opportunity to actually try the astronautical zero-G fancy shootin' game out for free. It's also 50% off the normal price, which is precisely half as much as it normally costs. That, I insist, is science.
]]>You’re fired into battle at a speed just shy of making the stars in front of you blur into parallel lines, an ever rising tone in your ear letting you know that your suit is coming online.
‘Establishing communication uplink.’
‘Creating simulated audio environment’
The HUD flickers into life on the inside of your visor, letting you know your orientation, the position or your nearby team mates, locations to hold and take. You’re in the thick of it.
That was a metaphor for something, but we'll come back to that.
]]>The next content patch for zero-G pew-pew game Shattered Horizon should arrive next week (May 5th). It's called "Firepower" because it focuses on expanding the range of weapons available to the killer astronauts. The armaments in question should gradually appear on this page.
Trailer below. It's a bit space-porny, and dudes get shot.
]]>Futuremark Games Studio just dropped us a line to mention that their astro-shooter, Shattered Horizon, is having one of those free weekend things on Steam. They say: "Shattered Horizon will be free to play and 50% off to purchase for the duration of the weekend." That's this weekend, 19th-21st. This will include the new Moonrise levels that they released this week. And I'll be on there to check out the fresh space rubble.
]]>Shattered Horizon, the zero-G astronaut deathmatch game from Futuremark Games Studio, didn't have enough levels. That's been remedied today with a free expansion, Moonrise, that delivers another four maps to the game. I have to say that while the game doesn't seem to have captured people's imaginations generally, this kind of space-porn level design is just the kind of thing I'd like to see more of. It's kind of a shame it's purely multiplayer, but perhaps if Futuremark can make a success of this they can look at something using the same tech in the future. Anyway, the full game is $15 on Steam, and there's a video of the new levels looking all moody below.
]]>Astronaut shooter Shattered Horizon will get a (free) four-map expansion in the near future. Testing on the new maps will begin soon, which is a good thing, as interesting space-levels are one of the best things about the game. "Selected players will help us test the new Moonrise levels from a very early stage," says design lead Antti Summala, who we interviewed last month. "Level design for zero gravity combat is a big challenge and we are looking forward to having real players help us create new experiences that cannot be found in other FPS games." The game is out now, and can be bought directly from the Shattered Horizon site. Check out my Eurogamer review for a verdict. There are also going to be Steam guest passes for existing players, soon.
]]>Ah, boring old reality, how you deny me my action-heroics in the stars. It's depressing enough that we seem to live in a post-space age era, but the fact that the space shuttle is being retired next year seems to put us even further away from our glorious future of zero-G combat in the vacuum of space. Thank goodness for videogame fantasy fulfillment, that's what I say. Shattered Horizon is out this week, and it's probably going to be the best astronaut deathmatch you're going to play this year. Probably. The launch trailer is below, and it features lots of dudes in spacesuits going limp and ragdolling into the void. Just like in my dreams...
Go read our interview for some more developer insight on the zero-G shooter. I'll probably conjure up a review once the launch game has been live for a while.
]]>Earlier this week we spoke to Antti Summala, the lead designer on astronaut shooter, Shattered Horizon. The resulting interview covers a bunch of topics, including the advantages of self-publishing, the reasoning behind making the game DirectX 10 only, and the problems of control systems when there is no universal up or down. The game itself is out on Steam for €20/$20/£15 on the 4th of November. Read on for a peek into Futuremark's adventures in near-future sci-fi.
]]>Astronaut deathmatch game Shattered Horizon, which I conveniently previewed for Eurogamer just here, has released a bit of footage. To keep those of you who can't be bothered clicking the link in the loop: it's a surprisingly good zero-g combat game between the survivors of the moon exploding, and I had a blast floating about on the beta. I wonder whether it lacks the complexity and wide appeal for genuinely longevity, but it's definitely a fun game idea, neatly executed. Anyway, go check out Futuremark's stylish game trailer below.
]]>Shattered Horizon is a rather clever physics shooter from Futuremark - you know, those chaps who make benchmarking apps to gauge how buff your PC is. Their game, as it happens, is also about the high end PC, being tuned for Vista/Windows 7, and requiring DirectX 10 as a minimum. It's a "multiplayer first-person shooter with unique freedom of movement and realistic zero gravity combat." And that means fancy-shootin' in the surrounds of orbital space debris: jet-pack spacemen with guns fighting inside the wreckage of the moon and various space stations, which is a premise I can dig. Zero-g combat could be ludicrously silly, or just rubbish, it's hard to tell. Either way, the batch of new screenshots posted on the main site look fairly promising, while the teaser tailer (posted below) is frankly a bit dodgy. Apparently there's a "technical beta" taking place right now, which suggests that, even though there's no release date confirmed, the game can't be too far off. We'll bring you some more details when we see them spinning through the cold vacuum of the internet.
