Capcom have announced their very own digital showcase, set for next week, where the publisher will show off upcoming games - including Resident Evil 4 Remake, Exoprimal, Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection, and more from Monster Hunter: Rise. So, pop March 9th on your calendar if you want to catch the Capcom Spotlight show. The showcase will begin at 10:30pm GMT/2:30pm PT and will run for approximately 26 minutes. There’s also a pre-show airing 20 minutes prior.
]]>Capcom’s monstrously big Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak is receiving its fourth free title update on February 7th. Sunbreak’s latest update adds new Event Quests, Anomaly Research content, paid DLC, and two new Elder Dragons to hunt. I don’t think any of these additions are as exciting as the giant Sweetcorn weapon introduced last year, but I digress.
]]>Oh. OK. I guess it’s time for me to publicly confess which games I voted for in this year’s advent calendar but that didn't get it, and without the usual protection of anonymity granted by group lists. Listen: please don’t judge me. I just want to say that up top before you find out where I live and start sending me pizzas or something. I am fallible. You cut me, I bleed red. I put my bread in the toaster one slice at a time.
Anyway, with that out the way, here’s a list of things I liked this year that no one else at RPS had a chance to play, or in one case just thought was total ass.
]]>I've been looking back over an entire year of RPS reviews and, well, we've written a lot. Over the past twelve months, the RPS treehouse and our merry band of freelancers have reviewed 168 games in total - and that includes early access reviews, PC-port reviews, group reviews, reviews-in-progresses, and your common or garden fully-fledged reviews. 168! Damn. Even though game releases are still suffering from pandemic pushbacks, 2022 has been a busy year for games. There wasn't a huge number of big name releases - although the ones that did come out were plenty big enough - but, as always, we've had a wealth of wonderful indies releasing all year round, and we scooped up as many of them as we could.
Out of all the games we’ve given any kind of review treatment throughout the year, only a handful of them recieved RPS’s coveted Bestest Best badge; just 23, to be exact. I've gathered them all in one big round-up bundle below (there are round-ups of our favourite bits from other sections of the site, too), and they make a great collection of games. Have a scroll and click on any that take your fancy for the full review. Enjoy!
]]>When you vow to "get outside more" and "be more adventurous" in the new year, hey, Game Pass subscribers will be able to do all that indoors. Capcom have announced that Monster Hunter Rise will hit Game Pass in January 2023, a great entry in their brill beast-bashing series. Microsoft have also detailed some more of the games coming to Game Pass before then, including Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga next week. That one might be a fun way to distract the kiddywinkles over Christmas. Read on for more future Game Pass additions.
]]>Beastie-battling action RPG Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak is getting a second free update on September 29th. While there’s some new monsters to square off against, I feel the most critically important part of the update is the layered weapons system. This gives you the option to unsheathe some truly bizarre weaponry, including something that appears to be a comically huge ear of sweet corn. Witness for yourself by watching the trailer below.
]]>Last time, you decided that a really big unreal place is better than going undercover. Good. Very good. Great deciding, reader dear. I'm wholly impartial, of course, but I am glad you haven't forced me to come up with some contrived reason to jam a really big unreal place back into the running. We can continue. This week, it's a question of jarring vs. juicy. What's better: physics freakouts or beautiful food?
]]>Want to know how to unlock and use Qurious Crafting and augments in Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak? Title Update 1 for Sunbreak is here, bringing a wealth of new content and powerful upgrades. The biggest piece of the patch is the new Qurious Crafting system, which introduces weapon augments reminiscent of Iceborne’s system. Qurious Crafting also includes brand-new armor augments that shake up Sunbreak builds in unpredictable ways.
To access Qurious Crafting, you’ll need to hunt monsters using the new Anomalous Investigation system. This guide will walk you through unlocking investigations, raising your Anomaly Research Level, and powering up your Sunbreak builds with the new Qurious Crafting Augments.
]]>More monsters and expanded Anomaly Quests are coming to Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak tomorrow, August 10th, in the free version 11 update.
]]>Think FromSoftware and your mind instantly flits to a skeleton doing a forward roll doesn't it? Or an electrified goat that rolls. Or a bald man cackling as he kicks you down a hole. And, of course, the tricky boss fights with deformed dragons and Fell Omens from the West Country.
Since I've been playing Monster Hunter Rise, which is largely a succession of ever escalating boss fights with big lizards, I've begun comparing these scuffles with Elden Ring's boss battles. And I reckon much of their differences come down to the simple health bar, or lack of it.
]]>Even more giant lumbering beasts are heading straight for Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak when the first of its free title updates lands in August. Expect two new rare species along with a fresh area to explore. Let your finely crafted trousers tremble with anticipatory terror while you watch the trailer below.
]]>Want to know how to beat Gaismagorm, the final boss of Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak? Gaismagorm, Archdemon of the Abyss emerges for one of the longest, toughest fights in Sunbreak and marks the end of the main story. There is plenty of post-game content afterwards (and SPOILER ALERT! even a few new monsters), but after Gaismagorm the credits roll and your Master Rank unlocks. The fight isn’t easy though, and you’ll likely be repeating it a few times. Gaismagorm has some of the best weapons for raw damage in Sunbreak and a few excellent armour pieces, so use this guide to master the fight and farm all the Gaismagorm gear you need for your builds.
]]>Want to know how to beat Malzeno in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak? Malzeno is the flagship monster of the new Sunbreak expansion and introduces some new mechanics to the series. Those mechanics (endgame spoiler alert!) are also extremely relevant to Sunbreak’s post-game content, so Malzeno serves as a nice sampler of what’s to come (end spoilers). Malzeno bridges players from Master Rank 4 to 5 and into the hardest monsters the game has to offer, like Rajang, Bazelgeuse, and the Elder Dragons. Defeat Malzeno and take that next step into Sunbreak’s endgame with this guide.
]]>Monster Hunter has always been a series I've admired from afar. Like that smiling face with a tear running down one cheek emoji, I've watched friends discuss the trials and tribulations of a great Tigrex hunt and watched YouTube videos breaking down all the cool things you can do with the Insect Glaive.
So, with Monster Hunter Rise netting itself a bestest best badge and its Sunbreak expansion getting some serious praise in our review, I thought it was time to pull up my regular socks in the hopes that I could replace them with a pair woven from a big lizard's gooch. And I think I'm enjoying it? I think those socks could be mine? I just need to stop my brain from short-circuiting first.
]]>Want to know how to beat Gore Magala in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak? The terrifying Gore Magala returns in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, bringing with it some unique mechanics that will be unfamiliar to players who first got into Monster Hunter with World or Rise. In particular, Gore Magala’s unique Frenzy ailment requires some clever management. We will help you navigate the non-standard bits of the Gore Magala fight in this guide.
]]>Need help hunting Lunagaron in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak? Lunagaron is the second of the Three Lords, the central monsters of the Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak story. You will encounter Lunagaron as the gateway quest to Master Rank 4, not too long after fighting Garangolm. Lunagaron is a quick and deadly ice monster with a number of tricks up its sleeve. If you’re struggling to handle the second lord, this guide is here to help.
]]>Want to know how to unlock all the new switch skills in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak? The Sunbreak expansion is here and brings with it two new Switch Skills for each of Monster Hunter’s classic weapons. Sunbreak also introduces Switch Skill Swap Scrolls, which allow players to dynamically change between two Switch Skill loadouts during battle. Unlocking both skill swapping and the new skills is mercifully much simpler than it was in the base game. This guide will help you get there.
]]>The arrival of Monster Hunter Rise's Sunbreak expansion has brought a swathe of quality of life improvements to Capcom's beast-bashing action game, including support for Nvidia's performance-boosting DLSS tech. Announced earlier this week as part of the game's 10.0.2 patch notes, enabling DLSS does bring some welcome frame rate improvements to proceedings, but it also, err... has the rather unexpected side effect of shaving off everyone's hair / fur. And in a game about felling all manner of feathery, scaly lizard animals, that's not exactly ideal.
]]>Want to learn how to beat Garangolm in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak? Garangolm is the first of the “Three Lords,” a trio of monsters at the center of the story in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. You will encounter Garangolm relatively early as the first Master Rank 3 quest. This series newcomer is one of the first major difficulty spikes in Sunbreak and can be a real challenge for the unprepared. If you need a hand with this ruinous beast, we’re here to help.
]]>Looking for all the sub-camps in Monster Hunter Rise? Campsites provide additional fast travel points around Monster Hunter Rise’s maps and a place to rest, eat, and change your loadout. To unlock each sub-camp, you must find its location, then speak to the merchant in Kamura or Elgado to access an unlock quest. Complete the quest, and that camp will be available as a fast travel destination and tent site forever. Below you’ll find every camp on every map in the game.
This list includes the new Sunbreak maps. So, this guide does contain location spoilers for Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak! Stop scrolling after Lava Caverns if you wish to avoid new area names and map images.
]]>I loved Monster Hunter: Rise when I first played it on Switch last year, but I’ll admit that I sort of sleep-walked through its entirety, dreamily kicking the tails off a couple of raptors before making them into a fashionable pair of hot pants. This wasn’t a bad thing, mind. Far from it. I found Rise to be a substantially better-paced MonHunt entry compared to its predecessors, the series’ steep barrier to entry readjusted to a gentle incline that was more palatable for newcomers like me. Monster Hunter’s particular flavour of RPG design has always felt like trying to find a fork in a friend’s kitchen while they’re in another room. Nothing is where you expect it to be and there are a lot of things here you just don’t understand. Admittedly Rise wasn’t much better, stuffed as it was with endless text-based tutorials, but at the very least it pointed out the right drawer this time around.
]]>Want to know how to start the new Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak expansion? Sunbreak launches on June 30th, bringing a host of new monsters and locales to Monster Hunter Rise on both PC and Switch. Sunbreak is an extension of Rise’s story, and adds new Master Rank monsters and quests to the equation. That means to start Sunbreak’s content, you need to complete enough of the base Monster Hunter Rise story to get caught up. This guide will clarify exactly what you need to have completed, and include some tips for getting there faster.
]]>A free demo of Capcom’s upcoming beastie-slashing action RPG expansion Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak is releasing on Steam today. It’s worth putting aside at least 10GB ready for the install if you’re planning to take a crack at it. Hop onto your canine mount and check out the trailer below for a glance in advance.
]]>Seregios can get stuffed. I recently faced off against the massive golden dragon during a hands-on session for Sunbreak, the upcoming expansion pack for Monster Hunter Rise, and it battered me repeatedly for the best part of an hour. It has become the flying white whale to my dual blade wielding Ahab, and I left the preview event determined to chop it to bits when the DLC finally arrives later this month.
Sunbreak’s new master rank quests aren’t messing around, basically. It seems Capcom have taken criticisms that the base version of Monster Hunter Rise didn’t provide challenging enough end-game content to heart, and have loaded the expansion with some truly agonising encounters purpose-built for returning veterans.
]]>Capcom have unveiled more deets about their upcoming beast-laden expansion Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, including a closer look at its new big bad Elder Dragon Malzeno. Monster Hunter series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto and Sunbreak director Yoshitake Suzuki also debuted three more monsters you'll be meeting in the expansion during their latest digital broadcast, along with its new Switch Skill Swap ability and Follower Quests.
]]>Capcom today confirmed a release date of June 30th for Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, the first expansion for the latest in their monster-mashing series. In a livestream they also get into the expansion's story, its world, and many of the big dogs you'll be killing then skinning. Watch on for all the dog-destroying deets.
]]>Capcom have released a new Monster Hunter Rise patch aimed at fixing a frustrating bug with save files which stopped some would-be players from playing at all. Thankfully, a week and change later, that seems to be fixed—though a little extra fiddling is required if you did suffer this bug.
]]>Want to know how to fix the "failed to save" bug in Monster Hunter Rise on PC? Since the PC port of Monster Hunter Rise launched last week, many players have unfortunately found themselves unable to play thanks to a game-breaking bug that crashes the game on start-up. Known as the "failed to save" bug, the issue stems from the game being unable to generate a save file, leaving players stuck in an infinite loop on the start-up screen.
]]>What is the best armor set in Monster Hunter Rise? If you thought the selection of weapons on offer in Monster Hunter Rise was mind-boggling, I have some big news for you about the game's armor sets. In the base game alone, I counted 142 named sets in total (not counting Layered Armor sets) but to be honest my eyes were starting to go funny; besides which some sets have more pieces than others, and most but not all have male and female hunter variants, making it tricky to put together direct comparisons between all sets. And that's not even taking into account the Sunbreak DLC, which as per tradition adds an armor set for each of the new monsters introduced in the add-on.
]]>What are some of the top tips for beginners in Monster Hunter Rise? Monster Hunter Rise has its quirks, and whether you're a complete newbie to the Monster Hunter series or you've played every single other title in the franchise, there's bound to be a few things that take you by surprise. That's likely to be doubly true if you've just jumped in with the release of the Sunbreak DLC, either after a few months' downtime following the launch of the base game on PC, or as a brand-new player starting the whole production from the very beginning.
To compound the issue, the game's tutorials aren't always delivered at the best moments, and you may well find that you've clicked through several pop-up text boxes without really taking in some information you later wish you'd paid more attention to. There are plenty of things I wish I'd understood before embarking on my first few quests, so on this page, I'll pass on to you the most important things I've learned about starting out in Monster Hunter Rise.
]]>How do I lock on in Monster Hunter Rise for PC? In Monster Hunter Rise, you'll frequently find that your prey runs away from you at various points during the fight. Large (boss) monsters in particular are inclined to try to flee once you've landed a certain amount of damage on them. Keeping track of them at these points can be tricky, particularly if there are multiple large monsters showing on the map.
]]>Nine months after its debut on Nintendo Switch, Monster Hunter Rise today launched on PC. Capcom's latest lizard-skinning simulator is a good'un, and what we played of it pre-release seemed like a solid PC port. However, now the game is out in the world, some would-be players are being blocked out by a bug which doesn't let them even start a new save. Still, the majority of folks seem to be quite happily hollowing out dogs to make slippers.
]]>Which Monster Hunter Rise quests can you play in multiplayer? Monster Hunter Rise features two main types of quests: Village Quests and Hub Quests. Broadly speaking, these respectively represent single-player and multiplayer quests, but there's actually a little more to it than that. Returning Monster Hunter players might also notice a few differences between this iteration's multiplayer compared to older games in the franchise.
]]>What is the best weapon in Monster Hunter Rise? Monster Hunter Rise features 14 weapon types, all of which you have access to from the very start of the game. Within each weapon type there are multiple model sets and variants, however, including some new ones added with the Sunbreak DLC; so in truth, you'll have dozens if not hundreds of weapons to choose from by the end of the game. As you progress you'll be able to upgrade and customise them all in a dazzling (some might say overwhelming) array of ways.
]]>Monster Hunter Rise is about to see a rise in monster hunters, as the PC’s cosiest killing-for-sport RPG is now available on Game Pass. Since this is likely to introduce a few boatloads of curious would-be huntspeople to the world of Palamutes, gunlances, and enchanted dango, now seems like a good time to revisit our guide to Rise’s best settings to use on PC.
This is no PC-melter, and its system requirements aren’t exactly a Forspoken-style shopping list of premium components. The upside, you might say, of Monster Hunter Rise being a Nintendo Switch port, and thus having been designed for something with the horsepower of a Meccano motor.
]]>After the roaring success of Monster Hunter: World back in 2018, the idea that the next big PC entry in Capcom's dino pants craft 'em up is a game that originally started life on the Nintendo Switch is bound to ruffle a few feathers. But far from being a step down from World, Monster Hunter Rise is every bit its equal - and Capcom's stellar work with this PC port has given it a much-needed buff and polish to really make it shine. Not only does Rise offer the same seamless and expansive environments as World, but it also adds a few new twists to make tracking down its titular titans even more enjoyable.
]]>When the PC version of Monster Hunter Rise arrives in January, it will include all the post-launch content released so far on Switch, Capcom have confirmed. Yes, this includes the weird Sonic The Hedgehog crossover which launches today. So when the game finally comes our way, it'll be both larger and sillier.
]]>The recent launch of the Monster Hunter Rise demo on PC has given us a free look at how this soon-to-be-former Nintendo Switch exclusive will run and play when it releases in full in January 2022. This calls, naturally, for some screenshot comparisons.
]]>Despite having sunk several hours into Monster Hunter Rise on my Nintendo Switch this year, I cannot tell you how excited I am to play the upcoming PC version. While my relationship with the previous game in the series, Monster Hunter: World, has been somewhat tainted by excessive hours of benchmarking, the Monster Hunter series has always been a sight to behold on PC, and Rise looks set to be no different - especially now I've had a chance to play the upcoming PC demo ahead of its release on Steam tomorrow, October 13th.
]]>Getting Monster Hunter games on PC still feels like a new treat, even after Monster Hunter World has been out for a few years. Next up for the action and fashion series is Monster Hunter Rise, which is already out on the Nintendo Switch and coming to PC in January. With the PC release coming ten months after the Switch, it's no surprise that MonHunt fans would be keen on being able to carry their save files over to PC in January with cross-progression. Capcom looked into the possibility they say, and cross-platform multiplayer too, but won't be doing either, they've now said.
]]>Monster Hunter Rise is the sixth mainline game in Capcom's series about biffing majestic beasts and turning them into fetching headgear. It released on Switch earlier this year, and we've known all along that it was coming to PC eventually. Now it has a specific release date: January 12th, 2022.
Better yet, it's getting a demo, and it'll be available on October 13th.
]]>Though Monster Hunter Rise isn't even out on PC for months yet, Capcom have announced an expansion is coming our way. During last night's Nintendo Direct stream they revealed Monter Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, which will launch simultaneously on Switch and PC in summer 2022. Hey, at least that means while consoleers had to wait over a year for the expansion, we'll have it after only a few months. Have a peek in the announcement trailer.
]]>Monster Hunter Rise isn't due to arrive on PC until early next year, but I've been playing the Switch version over the last week after getting the game for my birthday - and I actually can't stop. Over the last couple of weeks, I've been slicing up its oversized lizards with my beloved Dual Blades like nobody's business, gutting their scales, pelts, fangs and goodness knows what else to make even stronger pairs of dino pants so I can get back out there and take on ever-larger beasties and make ever more fashionable trousers. It's a familiar rhythm to Monster Hunter games of yore, but there's something about Rise that's kept me hooked far longer than my jaunts in previous MonHan games, including PC mega hit Monster Hunter: World. And I think it's partly down to my new dog friends, the Palamutes.
]]>E3 2021 is approaching faster than I'm comfortable with, and yet I'm also eager for it to just hurry up and start already. Another step towards that happening: Capcom announced (a presumably partial) line-up for their showcase.
On Moday, June 14th at 2:30pm PDT/5:30pm EST/10:30pm BST, you'l be able to watch news on The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, Monster Hunter Stories 2, Monster Hunter Rise, and Resident Evil Village.
]]>This is a slightly different episode of The Weekspot. We had to record a little earlier because of the Easter weekend in the UK, and Matthew wasn’t able to come on because of prior commitments.
So, instead of talking to myself for an hour and a half, I drafted in two lovely guests: Josh Wise of VideoGamer and Rich Walker of Xbox Achievements.
]]>If you're into fighting big monsters with even bigger weapons then I have some good news for you. Capcom have confirmed that the Nintendo Switch action-RPG Monster Hunter Rise will arrive on PC early 2022. Rise will be similar to its beast-slaying hack and slash predecessor Monster Hunter World, with open areas to explore, though with slightly faster-paced combat this time. It also features little dog pals rather than cat ones, so it's absolutely on my watch list.
]]>
