If you're a fan of roguelikes and metroidvanias (hello), then you might be pleased to know Dead Cells added a bunch of weapons, skins and skills from loads of good'uns. The Everyone Is Here update went live yesterday, bringing new challenges to Motion Twin's soulslike that will let you unlock characters from Blasphemous, Hyper Light Drifter, Guacamelee, Skul: The Hero Slayer, Curse Of The Dead Gods, and, most importantly (for me), Hollow Knight. Hooray for Hollow Knight content!
]]>Drinkbox's Guacamelee was one of the most enthusiastically fun metroidvanias released in recent years. Its bright and distinct world of Mexican mythology, Lucha Libre wrestling and terrible puns (plus tired memes, but we'll just gloss over that) were a joy to bounce, dropkick and people's elbow through. As such, it's no surprise I'm entirely on board for its sequel, Guacamelee! 2, now due out on August 21st. We've even got an updated trailer for you below, full of suplexed skellingtons, mariachi melodies and cartoon chickens.
]]>This is... odd. Guacamelee! 2 has been announced for PC/Steam at PAX. But also, this game was announced for PC last year? So it was unannounced and re-announced, and along the way it became a PlayStation 4 exclusive. And now it isn't. Guys, we're trying to run a news website here and you're making my life a living hell. Stop Press-lighting me. To sum up: the game is absolutely coming to PC now (and probably other platforms) but it looks great and honestly I just would rather be playing it than talking about when and where I might be playing it in the future.
]]>There's no shortage of great Metroidvanias out there these days, so to help narrow your search for what to play next, we've put together this list of the very best Metroidvania games to play on PC right now. Metroidvanias can be a little tricky to define at times. Most have big, knotty worlds to explore that often require the use of specific abilities to access its farthest corners, but while some put a greater emphasis on slow and methodical combat, others stuff every pixel with rock hard platforming challenges to test their players' mettle. We like to keep an open mind when it comes to these things, but that does mean our list of the best Metroidvanias may include the odd controversial choice or two. What's important, though, is that all of these games are brilliant, and come with our seal of approval.
]]>Rowdy luchadors will return for more metroidvania action with Guacamelee! 2 next year, developers DrinkBox Studios have announced. Bad things are happening again, so we'll need to fight them again. This is good news, as our John declared the first game "a cut above the rest, a shining example of the form" as a Metroidvania - but a game blighted by bad boss battles. That was then and this is now. Have a peek at Guacamelee! 2 in today's announcement trailer:
]]>Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.
Guacamelee is a wonderful game, a superb Metroidvania, and a real tedious pile of boss fights.
]]>When punchy platformer Guacamelee! arrived on PC, it came as a shiny Gold Edition packing DLC from the original console release. But then developers DrinkBox fancied it up again with fancy new things for those fancier new consoles as the Super Turbo Championship Edition, meaning we were stuck with just a plain old really fun game. Ugh! Who wants that! But good news, parity-seekers. This Thursday, the Super and Turboness are coming to PC via Steam. It'll be a standalone release rather than an upgrade, though DrinkBox will cut $10 off for folks who own the Gold Edition.
]]>Say kid, how do you fancy being a YouTube sensation, a real livestream Liberace? "B-but where would I even start?" you ask, eyes wide with hope. A new Humble Weekly Sale offers almost everything you need to become an Internet megastar, minus the hardware and a dreadful persona.
Curated by 'PewDiePie' (he has YouTube's most-subscribed channel, don't you know?) the bundle packs a few games the exhausting manbaby personality has wailed obscenities over, including Surgeon Simulator 2013, Garry's Mod, and State of Decay.
]]>Another Humble Indie Bundle? What a strange turn of events. I thought for sure that Humble was going to suddenly and inexplicably shut down their massively successful enterprise this time around. I mean, they're on Humble Indie Bundle 11 now. What a gross number. Ten - nay, X - was so svelte, so confident. It plucked the olive from life's martini glass just so, and we all just wanted its gaze to fall on us for a single precious second. So seriously, what's even the point of having more Humble Bundles? Oh, right: amazing games and charity and stuff. This time around, the star-studded lineup includes Guacamelee, Monaco, Antichamber, and my personal favorite puzzler of 2013, The Swapper.
]]>Guacamelee: Gold Edition has been out since before the stars were born, so it's really about time we let you know Wot One Of Us Thinks. The 2D, side-scrolling Metroidvania is a cut above the rest, a shining example of the form. And also a damned good example of how boss fights can really spoil things. Here's wot I think:
]]>Are you ready to be positively buried under amazing games? Well too bad. Games are largely distributed via non-physical means now, and that's a weird thing to do with them anyway. Take your sick, fetishistic disc orgies somewhere else. (Note: RPS does not actually discriminate against fetishes. Just physical media.) There are, however, a lot of brand new, positively excellent games suddenly populating our hobby's infinitely expanding sea, and you should really just probably play all of them. I quite liked what I played of Papers, Please, the consolefolk enjoyed Guacamelee, and everybody with air in their lungs and a beating heart in their chest loves Spelunky.
]]>RPS Headline Generatron 5000, are you taking side jobs again? We agreed to let bygones be bygones after those puntastic Leviathan: Warships ads, but come on: Guacamelee? You're under contract, and you didn't think we'd notice your obvious handiwork there? This is a heinous betrayal of our trust, and to make matters worse, I can't even come up with a pun to top it in our headline for the announcement of Guacamelee's PC version. Heh, top it. As one might some form of snack food with guacamole. ARGH THAT WAS TERRIBLE SEE WHAT YOU'VE MADE ME DO.
