While we're getting a Gears Of War prequel in Gears Of War: E-Day, this does mean that Gears Of War 6 is yet to be a thing. In a recent episode of IGN's Podcast Unlocked, former Gears Of War director and current Diablo 4 lead Rod Fergusson revealed what his plans were for Gears 6 when he left. In short, he was going to take the game to space. Righto.
]]>Netflix’s take on chonky soldiers vs. equally chonky underground aliens is, excuse me, gearing up. Last November, the streaming service announced plans to adapt Gears Of War’s chainsaw-swinging into an animated series and a live-action film. The latter has now tapped a writer. Jon Spaihts is the Oscar-nominated screenwriter behind Dune, Prometheus, and Doctor Strange, and he’s now writing the Gears Of War film, Netflix announced today.
]]>Microsoft has announced mass layoffs that will affect the developers behind Starfield, Halo Infinite, and Gears Of War. Bloomberg report that it’s not yet known what the scale of the job losses at Bethesda and 343 Industries will be, and Kotaku has also confirmed that The Coalition will also lose staff. Sources claim that some of the staff who’d lost their jobs at the affected studios were veterans who’d been with Microsoft for more than a decade. This layoff announcement from Microsoft has been made exactly a year after the company revealed they were buying Activision Blizzard.
]]>Get your chainsaw guns, body armour and chin-fluff at the ready, because the unstoppable assault of Netflix video game adaptations has found a new target. The Coalition’s Gears Of War series of beefy blastermen fending off equally beefy aliens is coming to the red streaming service at some indefinite point in the future, it’s been revealed. Netflix say they’re working together with The Coalition on producing both the movie and animation.
]]>On this week's episode of the Ultimate Audio Bang, we get all nostalgic as we pick our favourite FPS game modes over the years. It's mainly an excuse for me for me to bring up Gears Of War and it's long-forgotten Wingman mode, which I demand make a return to the series. I also learn that Hayden likes big games, big modes, and big comradery.
]]>Whatever Gears of War 6 will be called, (6EARS is my vote, so we can call it Six Ears), it’ll certainly have graphics. Developers The Coalition (who are named after the ‘Coalition of Ordered Governments’ in the Gears of War universe) have released a couple of new tech demos showing off their work in Unreal Engine 5 for GDC 2021, which showed a familiar theme of ancient ruins, shiny tech, and beards of war.
]]>Gears 5 has been out for nearly a couple years now, but don't start thinking about Gears 6, or Gears anything, for a while. The Coalition still have plans to bring more maps and characters to Gears 5 in two more Operations, they say, but the studio is also focusing on transitioning to the newest Unreal Engine. That's going to take most of their attention, so we shouldn't be expecting to hear about new Gears games for a while, they've warned.
]]>Microsoft had a lot of games to announce at E3 2018, but it's a little murkier this year to find out what was relevant for PC users. Some games were coming to both, others only to their Xbox One consoles. You could of course watch the entire conference right here, but for some there just isn't enough time to wade through the entire show.
Not to worry though, here are all the trailers and news for you in one place. There's a surprising amount of variety in the announced titles: from an old favourite making a return, much celebrated developers showing off their new series, to even a completely free game launching very soon. The games below aren't in any particular order but you're in for a long ride.
]]>Gears of War is coming back in a big way. Today's Microsoft E3 presser ended with a huge blast of Gears reveals. The first: a Funko based Gears of War game called Gears POP! which is... just bewildering? I don't know. Are any of you Gearheads also big Funko collectors? Seems like a weird place to start bridging games into the Funkoverse, but it is also a mobile game so what am I even complaining about? The second announcement is Gears Tactics, which is an XCOM style game set 100 years before Gears 1. That... that makes a lot more sense than Funkos. And finally, there's the big daddy announcement you all were waiting for: Gears of War 5 is indeed coming. We have two trailers and some storybits to enjoy today.
]]>Occasionally while surfing the interwebs, you'll stumble upon a Cool Thing from a few years back that you absolutely missed in the moment, but is both fascinating and painfully applicable now. I failed to notice that this post I love is from 2014, so while some of the examples are slightly dated, playing the associated game is still a frustrating experiment in awareness.
So let's play Male Protagonist Bingo.
]]>"If wanting that gun Blaine has is in the Predator is wrong, who'd want to be right?" Old Man Gillen said in 2008 about the first Gears of War. I mean, sure, Kieron's in favour of anything letting him pretend his tadger is a steel deathcannon spaffing at six thousand loads per minute, but the point is: big daft action games can be a right lark. That's why I'm glad to see Gears of War bring its crouch-running and chainsawing back to PC, with Gears of War 4 [official site] now out on Windows 10. Yes, Windows 10 only. But: chainsaw guns, yeah?
]]>I know what you all might be asking. "Game of Thrones in my Gears of War?" Well, it's more likely than you think. Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi has joined up with The Coalition to create the score for Gears of War 4 [official site]. "I certainly wanted to stay in the direction fans know, but at the same time, I wanted to bring my own style to it," Djawadi has said.
]]>Hey folks. This week I want to do something special – I want to quickly revisit a few board games I've covered before – because board games often reveal more of themselves over time. The games I cover this week are ones that have grown in my estimation since I first covered them here. Next week I'll be talking about games that have gone down in my estimation for one reason or another. I think it might be interesting to see how time has affected my take on these titles, and to see what you fine people think of these games the more you've played them.
Let's begin.
]]>No idea what this is yet, but Epic - they of Unreal and Gears of War - have just announced something brand new and PC-only called Paragon, and due for release next year. They're saying almost nothing, but they have released a short video of a dude with a gun and some robo-hands. However, there's talk of 'heroes' so I'm guessing it's not going to be a singleplayer shooter - perhaps something more akin to Blizzard's Overwatch? Or even to ex-Epic bigwig Cliff Bleszinski’s Lawbreakers?
]]>There's a new Gears of War game coming but if you want your regular fix of gruff flesh juggernauts on PC, you'll have to make do with a re-release of the first game in the series. Gears of War: The Ultimate Edition [official site] is coming to PC but there's no word of any other titles making their way across.

]]>Epic Games may be best known for the awesome Jazz Jackrabbit, but it seems like they're ready to move on to other things. Other things on the PC, apparently. Epic's newly teased PC-only project has, in all seriousness, been a long time in coming. "We might be working on a PC-only title," Epic president Mike Capps said during a PAX panel (via Joystiq). Bleszinski then drove the point home in his trademark chainsaw-gun-like fashion. "Let me say that again: we are working on a PC game." Apparently, it's an unannounced project, so that probably rules out the Minecraft-inspired Fortnite. Epic's staying tight-lipped beyond that, but for now "existent" is a step in the right direction.
]]>Sort of! You'll forgive me pulling a very small amount of wool over your eyes there, but the idea of the world's most absurdly macho action videogame embracing turn-based strategy, as Gears of War: The Boardgame does, is a wonderfully strange one. And also a fine confluence of RPS's farther-flung interests - the original Gears was released on PC (though the second was a sad casualty of Epic doing a frightened little piracy-wee) and of course we're prone to a healthy spot of boardgame coverage now and again.
]]>In their Epic issue, the Escapist pays me cash money to vent a little about the somewhat odd double-standard people have about adolescent games, specifically Gears of War.
]]>While Kieron has been making space-adventurers wear hot pink and disco-dance in Tabula Rasa, I've been feeling the effects of a swollen Y chromosome playing some Gears Of War on PC. Big, big men, see how they kill. I'm not sure what it is about Epic's current design ethos, but I just can't get over the hyper-solidity of these soldiers and their kill-to-be-caring attitudinizing. Marcus and Dom. It's like each knows what the other one is thinking...
