What on earth is a Frogpig? You can't drop the word Frogpig in an update post without telling me more. Show me more. Show me where you're keeping the Frogpigs, Dustwind. I'm sure you're excited about this whole story thing you're dropping, but you're not going anywhere until you tell me where the Frogpigs are. I'm warning you.
Where were we? Right: Isometric tactical bloodbath Dustwind dropped a big update today, bringing the multiplayer-only game a singleplayer campaign full of blood, guts, dogs and a gun-toting leading lady.
]]>I've always thought that Fallout Tactics got an unfairly bad rap. Yes, it had its balance and structure issues, but it had an interesting combat engine. I'd like to think that Dustwind's developers agree, as their game bears more than a passing resemblance. Fraser Brown took a look at it while it was in early access, and found an intriguing web of systems, sadly under-populated. With the release of the full version yesterday that seems less of an issue, as it now includes solo squad command (real-time with pause style) and a bevy of co-op modes, user-made solo missions and bots.
]]>This week’s Premature Evaluation dumps Fraser in Dustwind’s isometric wasteland, forced to murder other players in grisly real-time tactical brawls. Also it has dogs.
I'll admit it -- I decided to take Dustwind for a spin primarily because of one line on the Steam store page: “Play as a dog.” In post-apocalyptic battle arenas that evoke Fallout and Wasteland, no less. And we’re not talking about your run-of-the-mill, hangs out in dog parks defecating everywhere kind of dog. No, Dustwind’s pooches are battle-hardened terrors, capable of covering the battlefield in mines or manning a vehicle’s turret. How could I say no? How could it go wrong?
]]>Looks a bit like Fallout dunnit, that screenshot ↑ up there? Probably not a coincidence. It's from Dustwind [official site], an upcoming real-time tactical RPG about undertaking combat missions in the post-apocalyptic wasteland to rebuild human civilisation - and the devs cite Fallout Tactics as an influence.
It's still relatively early days for the game, but creators Team Dustwind plan single- and multiplayer action with stats and oodles of weapons and a map editor to create your own wargrounds. Here, I'll tell you more.
