I'm a sucker for a good first-person runabout. I don't need to shoot, but it's sometimes nice to get a sword, or a big whip. As long as I get to be immersed in an adventure. I think that's the big theme of my selection box: being grounded within my player character. I want to feel what it's like to hike through canyons with too much sellable loot in my backpack. I want to park my soul in the head of a scared Scotsman way out of his depth, hundreds of miles from shore. The closer I can comfortably fit in my character's shoes, the more I seem to buy into the world they inhabit. Even if that world is constantly glowing a magnificent crimson.
]]>2024 was my first full year at RPS, and as a guides writer, it was a year packed with the sort of games that make you roll your sleeves up, wipe sweat from your brow, and stare up at the sky from the trenches, ruminating on what life is like when you aren't dealing with back-to-back Soulslikes interspersed with gacha games that feature incomprehensible lootbox mechanics.
]]>Let me continue the theme from our round-up of Steam sale reccs for under a tenner, while exchanging the concept of money for the concept of time: what can you do in celebrated open world "anecdote generator" Dragon's Dogma 2 in two hours or less? Two hours being the length of the free Dragon's Dogma 2 trial that is now live on Steam. For context, this is approximately how much time Capcom gave me to preview their latest action-RPG, many headline cycles ago. During that brief window, I managed to become the worst wizard in Dragon's Dogma 2, but I know you can go further. I'm so confident of this, in fact, that I'm going to start feeling all insecure and hurt in anticipation. How could you trample on my feelings so?
]]>Capcom are working on another Dragon's Dogma 2 patch, and this one takes as its target the dreaded dragonsplague, which causes the game's AI-controlled pawns to go nuts and murder everybody, including story-critical NPCs, if you allow it to go untreated for long enough. It'll reduce the infection frequency of dragonsplague, which is spread when pawns mingle with other pawns online, and make the symptoms more obvious. Pawns already get glowing eyes when they're dragonsplagued - I guess they'll be all the glowier in future.

Below, we'll go through both of these points so you're equipped to travel the world of Dragon's Dogma 2.
]]>If you’ve read my duology on spending far too long queuing in Hitman, you’ll know I’ve a predilection for the virtual people watching of NPCs in games that have some sort of schedule system. "It’s a wholesome pursuit of game design knowledge!" I stammer, as the guards approach. "It gives me a greater appreciation for the obscure details lurking in the hidden corners of virtual cities!" I protest, as I’m clapped in chains after being caught staring through a blacksmiths window for four hours watching him eat the same heel of bread, rubbing my hands together and grinning manically. Imagine my glee, then, when an early quest in action RPG Dragon's Dogma 2 not only condoned my weird hobby, but actively encouraged it.
Alfred is bardic beggar you’ll likely first encounter by Vernworth’s city square water feature. He’s doing a spot of medieval busking, spinning some brilliantly localized rhyming yarns to whoever will listen. He also periodically asks for beer money, even if you think he’s shit, which is a great pitch. Onlookers come and go, but after listening to him gas up the nobility with tall tales for a spell, you’ll likely spot a particularly enthusiastic permanent fixture off to the side. Have a chat, and he’ll tell you he reckons there’s something fishy about Alfred. He never sees much patronage from busking, but he never seems short of coin. Follow him around for a bit and see how he makes his money, won’t you? My annoyance that I’d just given Alfred several hundred gold immediately dissipated at the prospect of some quest journal-sanctioned stalking.
]]>Looking to change vocation in Dragon's Dogma 2? When starting a new game in Dragon's Dogma 2 you can pick from four starting vocations (Fighter, Archer, Mage or Thief). As you progress through the game and unlock more you may wish to change your Arisen or Main Pawn's vocation and respec your skills.
Luckily, it is possible to do so if you fancy a playstyle change or want to rank up in every single one. Read below for a full rundown of where to go to change your vocation in Dragon's Dogma 2 as well as how to get Discipline in the game.
]]>Interested in the best Trickster skills and augments in Dragon's Dogma 2? Of all the vocations in Dragon's Dogma 2, the Trickster is the trickiest, pardon the pun. Instead of attacking with a weapon, the Trickster is all about baffling opponents with trails of smoke from the Censer, a special tool exclusive to the class. This is perhaps the hardest vocation to use well in Dragon's Dogma 2, but those who enjoy playing support roles and watching confused enemies fight amongst themselves may find that the payoff to studying the Censer's smoke is worth it.
Whether you're looking for info on unlocking the Trickster or are simply curious about this vocation's unorthodox style, we're here to help. In this guide, we've delved into the best Trickster skills and augments, giving you the rundown on what you need to let the smoke fly.
Before we begin, it's worth noting that the Trickster is an advanced vocation, and not accessible at the start of Dragon's Dogma 2. See our guide on how to unlock the Trickster for more information.
]]>Everyone likes Dragon's Dogma 2, it seems. Except everyone also seems to dislike one specific part of Dragon’s Dogma 2: the fantasy sequel’s microtransactions. But that one dull spot has already been polished out by modders, who are offering more convenient (and less expensive) ways to pick up items that you’ll either need to potentially grind or cough up real money for.
]]>Looking to change your appearance in Dragon's Dogma 2? Dragon's Dogma 2 has a substantial character creator full of options to make your perfect Arisen and Pawn pals. As with any RPG, you may find yourself looking at a complete stranger once you leap from character creator to in-game lighting, however.
If you're facing character creator remorse, don't fear - there are ways to change your character's appearance in-game. Join us as we go through all your options for changing your character's physical appearance in Dragon's Dogma 2.
]]>Interested in the best Mystic Spearhand skills and augments in Dragon's Dogma 2? One of the two main vocations that combine might and magick in Dragon's Dogma 2, the Mystic Spearhand is a powerful combatant wielding the elegant Duospear. From spinning strikes to supplementary spells that can lift enemies up in a bubble before smashing them back into the ground, these expert spear fighters have a plethora of options in their arsenal.
Whether you're looking for info on unlocking the Mystic Spearhand or want a thorough explanation of this vocation's hybrid complexities, we're here to help. In this guide, we've delved into the best Mystic Spearhand skills and augments, giving you the rundown on what you need to make both ends of that Duospear sizzle.
Before we begin, it's worth noting that the Mystic Spearhand is an advanced vocation, and not accessible at the start of Dragon's Dogma 2. See our guide on how to unlock the Mystic Spearhand for more information.
]]>Fantasy action-RPG Dragon's Dogma 2 has had a tumultuous launch week: praised by reviewers, slated for its performance issues, and berated for its microtransactions, which appear to have been stealthily added after the game was sent to critics. Now begins the labour of patching the game. Capcom have released a few hints about forthcoming Dragon's Dogma 2 updates. Their plans for the PC version include letting players acquire dwellings earlier on in the story, improving quality when DLSS super resolution is enabled, and adding the option to start a new game when save data already exists.
]]>Looking for Dragon's Dogma 2 tips for beginners? With so many dungeons to explore and so many monsters to defeat in Dragon's Dogma 2, it's fair to feel slightly overwhelmed at the onset of Capcom's expansive action RPG.
Luckily, we're here to help your first hours as a resurrected Arisen feel a little smoother. Read on to learn ten pivotal tips and tricks that'll help you in a wide variety of areas, from making the most of your trusty pawn companions to fighting oversized beasts on the many roads of Dragon's Dogma 2.
]]>Last time I checked, my pawn Bronco sat at 80 in the monthly leaderboard of the pawn global rankings. Not forgetting that this is pre-release, so his place within the top 100 isn't quite as good as it seems. This pains me. I am saddened that my sweet, sweet boy Bronco isn't being picked up by adventurers as much as I'd like. He may not be a 1:1 recreation of a popular anime character or like, Tony Blair, but he is fantastic at shredding monsters.
Thing is, his ranking means that I'm not doing enough. Right now, I need to make his CV more appealing to prospective clientele and I need to become the agent he deserves. Dragon's Dogma 2 may be an action RPG, but it is also about being the best agent you can possibly be.
]]>Dragon's Dogma 2 arrives on PC and consoles today, but despite high critical acclaim when reviews hit earlier this week, players on Steam have begun review-bombing Capcom's high fantasy RPG after the appearance of some sudden and confusing microtransactions. These weren't present in the press build of the game, and players are so up in arms about them that the game is currently sitting on a fat red "Mostly Negative" Steam rating based on over 11,000 reviews and counting.
]]>Looking for the best Dragon's Dogma 2 vocations? There are ten vocations in total in Dragon's Dogma 2, ranging from RPG mainstays like the Fighter and Mage to more unorthodox fare like the Mystic Spearhand. You're also not locked into a single vocation, and there's nothing to stop a particularly adventurous Arisen from ranking up every single one. Even if you stick to a single vocation, you may want your main pawn companion as well as all of the other pawns you recruit to specialise in other vocations in order to create a party suited to all situations.
In other words, every Arisen who sets out to vanquish the titular winged boss of Dragon's Dogma 2 will eventually come into contact with the game's many classes. We've ranked each of these vocations in the guide below to help you decide which is right for you and your squad.
]]>Dragon's Dogma 2 is, as a game per se, very good! It’s creative and intelligent and lets you fill other players’ worlds with recruitable humanoid versions of your pet cats. Still, a technical masterclass it is not. In my performance analysis, I touched on DD2 being particularly unplayable on the Steam Deck, suffering from sub-10fps framerates and a bunch of broken settings. Since that was based on pre-release code, I had quietly hoped that Capcom could pull something – anything – out of the bag to salvage handheld PC play in time for launch day, but now the time has come, I’ve checked again, and nope. This RPG adventure simply doesn’t work on the Steam Deck, and probably never will.
]]>Interested in the best Mage skills and augments in Dragon's Dogma 2? Mages are the iconic support spellcasters of Dragon's Dogma 2, equally capable of firing flames at opponents and popping a healing aura in rapid succession. Mages are also the most vulnerable starting Vocation, since their reliance on light armour makes them susceptible to heavy damage, and it takes a fair bit of time for their spells to actually kick in.
If you're a lover of standing in the backrow as your spells help allies and hinder enemies, grab your pointy hat and robe, as the Mage is tailor-made for you. In this guide, we've delved into the best Mage skills and augments, giving you the rundown on what you need to know to make this magick-wielding spellsmith your own.
]]>Interested in the best Fighter skills and augments in Dragon's Dogma 2? When it comes to knocking down a horde of fantasy foes, there's nothing like a good ol' fashioned Fighter. This is especially true in Dragon's Dogma 2. While some of the game's other Vocations might require a bit more explanation to grasp, the Fighter should be immediately familiar to anyone who's played an RPG in the past. You know the deal - slip on your sword and shield and get ready to wade into the thick of combat.
That said, like any timeless character class, the Fighter Vocation is simple on the surface but possesses great depth. In this guide, we've delved into the best Fighter skills and augments, giving you the rundown on what you need to know to make monsters quiver in the face of your melee mastery.
]]>Interested in the best Archer skills and augments in Dragon's Dogma 2? Archers in Dragon's Dogma 2 fire arrows at the speed of light, turning enemies into pin cushions from a comfortable distance. With a wide variety of trick shots at their disposal, along with a few nimble moves that involve kicking baddies in the face right before blasting an arrow into their jaws, Archers are nimble and quite a lot of fun, especially if you like dealing heavy damage while keeping yourself relatively free of harm.
There are a few things to watch out for if you take up the bow and arrow, especially as Archers are one of the few vocations in Dragon's Dogma 2 to juggle some inventory management. In this guide, we've delved into the best Archer skills and augments, giving you the rundown on what you need to know to make your arrows fly fast and powerful.
]]>Interested in the best Thief skills and augments in Dragon's Dogma 2? The Thief in Dragon's Dogma 2 perfectly fills the niche of the agile rogue with short blades at the ready, always capable of stabbing you in the dark and running off with a bit of your coin. They might be more vulnerable than other melee vocations and feature a trickier skillset, but a good Thief will pack a punch that won't soon be forgotten.
With a plentiful array of attacks that can eviscerate enemies, there's a lot to choose from when narrowing down the Thief's focus. In this guide, we've delved into the best Thief skills and augments, giving you the rundown on what you need to know to make your daggers strike true.
]]>Interested in the best Sorcerer skills and augments in Dragon's Dogma 2? When it comes to damage-dealing magick, the Sorcerer of Dragon's Dogma 2 is the one to call. This specialised mage focuses on big attack spells, differing from the mix of damage and support magick used by the Mage. You can expect some general similarities with the Mage's skillset here, but your focus will largely be on raining the elements down on your quarry in magnificent ways.
Whether you're looking for info on unlocking the Sorcerer or simply hoping to get some idea of the powerful magick at your disposal, we're here to help. In this guide, we've delved into the best Sorcerer skills and augments, giving you the rundown on what you need to know to truly manifest the most devastating spells anyone's ever seen.
Before we begin, it's worth noting that the Sorcerer is an advanced vocation, and not accessible at the start of Dragon's Dogma 2. See our guide on how to unlock the Sorcerer for more information.
]]>Interested in the best Warrior skills and augments in Dragon's Dogma 2? With a colossal two-handed sword at the ready, the Warrior of Dragon's Dogma 2 is a force to be reckoned with. While their inability to use shields makes them less tanky than Fighters, when it comes to severe and unforgiving damage output, a Warrior can't be beat.
Whether you're looking for info on unlocking the Warrior or simply hoping to get a better grip on this vocation's heavy charge attacks, we've got your back. In this guide, we've delved into the best Warrior skills and augments, giving you the rundown on what you need to know to make that greatsword's momentum unstoppable.
Before we begin, it's worth noting that the Warrior is an advanced vocation, and not accessible at the start of Dragon's Dogma 2. See our guide on how to unlock the Warrior for more information.
]]>Dragon's Dogma 2 is an RPG of many admirable qualities. I’m especially attached to my Arisen’s current pair of Pawns, one of whom speaks with the wonderfully stretched intonations of a pitch-shifted Matt Berry. Sadly, none of its achievements pertain to technical fidelity. While decent-looking, Dragon’s Dogma 2 takes some serious hardware to maintain consistently smooth performance, with lowered quality settings lending only the most limp-wristed of helping hands.
]]>You know when you remember a game really fondly and instead of ageing alongside you, it becomes more modern in memory? The Dragon's Dogma 2 experience is, essentially, how I remember its predecessor Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen. To me, DD2 feels like a remaster of the first, except it looks nicer, is more expansive, and features some rejigs to things like your AI pals.
Not that any of this is a bad thing! In fact, DD2's closeness to the original makes it just as much of a joy as the first, where your grand adventure isn't only grander, it's still at the whims of a world governed by chaotic physics and the passage of time. Quirks remain, for good and bad, but ultimately this is an RPG where you make travel plans and the game does it best to dash them. It never gets old.
]]>Welcome to the third and final part of my Dragon's Dogma 2 hands-on diary, in which I heroically try to make headway in Capcom's outsized fantasy RPG with a party of pure magic-users. I am Dragonkin Skywalker - telekinetic Mystic Spearhand, oxcart patron and an extremely bad thief. Joining me on the adventure are three AI-controlled pawns - the diabolical fury that is Donald Duck, the levitating liability that is Galadriel, Queen of the Woods, and the class act that is celebrity stage magician David Blaine, all of whom I have given new and stupid names plucked from my vast knowledge of wizardry across different entertainment fields.
]]>High was the sun and gladsome the breeze when Dragonkin Skywalker, Donald Duck and the Lady Galadriel arrived in the city of Vernworth, there to make new friends and disturb the peace. Oh sorry, let me back up a bit: this is the second chapter of my Dragon's Dogma 2 hands-on diary, in which I experiment with fielding a party consisting exclusively of spell-casters.
]]>Dragon's Dogma series director Hideaki Itsuno has announced that the meat you can cook over campfires in Dragon's Dogma 2 is, in fact, "real meat". There's been a certain amount of PlayStation-instigated speculation about whether the meat is CGI-generated, following the last round of Dragon's Dogma 2 previews. Speaking to Japanese site 4Gamer, as translated by Automaton, Itsuno revealed that the game's scenes of sizzling flesh are derived from live action film of steaks being grilled - partly for the sake of authenticity, and partly to save money versus creating computer models of meat products. You can cook several types of meat in Dragon's Dogma, each of which has its own cutscene, and a number of Dragon's Dogmatists are already performatively salivating at the prospect on social media.
]]>Ahead of launching Dragon's Dogma 2 later this month, Capcom have released its character creator for free as a separate standalone doodad. You can create your character and your main Pawn (NPC sidekick) and save them to use in the full game. Or, if you're like me and cannot resist playing for hours in a character creator, you can enjoy fiddling with its many sliders and marvelling at the breadth of options like 334 different colours for its four eye colour settings and the ability to remove individual teeth. I made my kitten as my pal, because I guess that's what I do now.
]]>One of the sillier aspects of the original Dragon's Dogma was accidentally falling head over heels for some rando innkeeper, and having them appear beside you as your sweetheart during the ending scenes, much to the surprise of many players who didn't realise they were hitting on every NPC they did a favour for.
The game's Affinity system saw NPCs organically forming an attachment to players when you interacted with them, gave them things or carried out tasks for them. Towards the conclusion, one NPC is selected as "Beloved" and promptly abducted by a dragon for you to quest forth and rescue. There are a few characters who are positioned more obviously as romanceables, but the brilliance of the system is that you can raise your Affinity with pretty much anybody. If you want to finish the game staring passionately into the eyes of the court jester or that hearty bloke who runs the armour shop, it's within your power.
]]>Yesterday I banged out the first in a torrid trilogy of Dragon's Dogma 2 features, centring on hands-on time with the game's Mystic Spearhand "vocation" or class. Look out for parts 2 and 3 over the coming week. During the hands-on, I also spent 45 minutes in the shoes of another advanced Dragon's Dogma 2 class, the Magic - sorry, Magick Archer. You might remember this vocation from the original Dragon's Dogma; then as now, it combines relatively straightforward bow combat with various breeds of enchanted ammunition, for a surprisingly technical skillset that is enjoyable to faff around with.
]]>Before I sat down to play three hours of Dragon's Dogma 2 at a Capcom event last month, I gave myself two broad objectives. The first was to discover if there's anything genuinely different about this undeniably enchanting but very familiar sequel to one of the happiest, barmiest action-RPGs of the past 20 years. The second was to royally screw myself by fielding a party consisting exclusively of magic-users.
In Dragon’s Dogma 2 as in Dragon’s Dogma 1, you lead a gang of up to three AI-controlled "pawn" characters – one permanent main sidekick who levels up alongside you, plus two auxiliary pawns created by other players, who are either summoned at Rift stones or spawned into the open world as hired help. As in most RPGs, the ideal party setup is a mix of pure melee, ranged and magical DPS or support classes, but given the whimsicality of Dragon’s Dogma’s sorcery, with its levitation spells and lightning whips, I’ve always wanted to try a whole playthrough as a posse of unescorted occultists.
]]>Ahhh, fast travel: the opinion generator. Speaking to IGN, Dragon's Dogma 2 director Hideaki Itsuno threw his own hat into the ring, saying that he's keen to avoid fast travel in DD2 and would prefer that "players travel normally and experience the world around them". If you're someone who argues all games should let you teleport to the objective, then Itsuno thinks you're wrong. Hey, he doesn't mess about, and I don't disagree with him, as long as the game isn't actually wasting my time.
]]>Happy New Year, folks! Have you recovered from the all the 100+ hour RPGs that came out last year? Well, I have good news and bad news for you. The good news is that everyone seems to be taking a bit of a breather in 2024, because (at time of writing at least) the official "big'uns" calendar is looking remarkably slim at the moment. There are still some heavy-hitters coming our way this year, such as Avowed, Star Wars Outlaws and Path Of Exile 2, but 2024 looks like another year where it will be the smaller, independent games that shine the brightest. They certainly make up the bulk of our most anticipated games list for 2024, which the RPS Treehouse has been feverishly putting together over the last few days. The bad news is that there are still loads of great games coming out. So come, join us, and see what's on our personal wishlists for 2024.
]]>Capcom's fantasy action-RPG Dragon's Dogma 2 will sell for $69.99 - $70, if you disregard the usual "deduct one cent to fool silly left-to-right readers into thinking it's significantly cheaper" gambit - when it releases in March 2024. If you're in the UK, the figure is currently £53.98 on Steam. It's the first time Capcom have sold the base edition of a game for $70 in the US of A, and follows comments this September from a Capcom executive that videogames are priced "too low" these days, based on how much games cost to make.
]]>Dragon's Dogma 2's release date seemed to leak via European ratings board PEGI a little over a week ago, and sure enough, it's now confirmed. Capcom's fantasy sequel will launch on March 22nd, 2024, and there's a new trailer.
]]>Capcom have announced a showcase for November 28th to delve into Dragon’s Dogma 2, a sequel to their oddball fantasy RPG from 2012. That’s exciting news to me, since the original’s small-person-climbs-big-monster combat was pure fun to simply watch. Doing the actual monster-stabbing was even better, though, and thankfully the sequel’s release date doesn’t seem that far off if a videogame ratings board is to be believed (accidental ratings boards leaks being the way many release dates are revealed these days).
]]>Capcom have unveiled the next generation of their in-house RE Engine, which came in alongside Resident Evil 7 in 2017 and has been used by a bunch of projects over the years, from the excellent Devil May Cry 5 to the forthcoming possibly-excellent Dragon's Dogma 2. RE Engine's successor, the REX engine, is a response to three things - 1) RE Engine productions getting bigger in terms of assets, and more diverse in terms of genre, 2) RE Engine games being increasingly made by overseas developers who speak different languages, and 3) unflattering comparisons with various commercial tools, like Unreal Engine and Unity.
]]>Dragon's Dogma was the action-RPG for people who wanted to play alone, but didn't want to feel alone. By far its most charming feature was the Pawn system, whereby you'd create an AI-controlled sidekick and hire two others, shared online by other players, to accompany you on your journey through a fantasy wilderness of tumbledown castles and goblin campfires. Pawns make dependable companions in many respects - pinning enemies for you to tag-team kill, healing or resurrecting you, opening chests you've missed, and enchanting your weapons at the outset of each skirmish. But what makes them fun to be around is that they're a bunch of massive buffoons.
Pawns talk without cease as you explore: a steady patter of idle observations about well-wrought staircases and the local fish trade, advice about the bestiary and, in the case of Pawns recruited from other players, quest tips based on time in their own worlds - all of it couched in the game's quirky faux-medieval dialect. Pawn dialogue is highly context-sensitive, and very often, nonsensical. They'll climb into fountains and complain that they're wet, and launch into pithy descriptions of monsters even as they're set on fire. It ought to be maddening, but somehow, it never is - probably because the Pawns never actually attempt to be witty like ally characters in, say, Xenoblade Chronicles. They're resolutely straight foils in a realm of lions with snakes for tails, chaotic boulder traps, unpleasantly lusty ogres, and players who push the wrong buttons and make random decisions on the fly. Well, pawns are back in Dragon's Dogma 2, which I recently played an hour of, and they're chattier than ever.
]]>Capcom announced Dragon's Dogma 2 last year, but they showed the game for the first time tonight during the PlayStation Showcase. Unlike a lot of the games on show, we got a proper look at in-game footage, too. Check it out below.
]]>In 2019, Dragon's Dogma director Hideaki Itsuno said Capcom had gaven him the freedom to choice between making a sequel to the fascinating fantasy RPG and making Devil May Cry 5. He went with DMC. But that punchfest has been out for years so...? Yes! Capcom last night announced Dragon's Dogma 2, following a nice presentation where the devs reminisced about making the first game.
