Those of you chained to the churning wheel of the internet might have seen this facial recognition algorithm thingo doing the rounds. It's called ImageNet Roulette, and it's basically a website where you feed in a photo of your human face and see what the cybergods of our terrible future make of you. But it's probably not safe to show the neurohive your real face. So we showed it 13 pictures of videogame characters instead, to see if the machine lords of the net realm can tell who they are and what they are all about. The short answer: not really, but sometimes. The neural net, it turns out, is a dangerous idiot.

Street Fighter V's fourth season debuts with Kage's surprise launchhttps://www.rockpapershotgun.com/street-fighter-vs-kage-starts-season-4Dominic TarasonMon, 17 Dec 2018 18:25:49 +0000https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/street-fighter-vs-kage-starts-season-4EsportsStreet Fighter VStreet Fighter V: Arcade EditionCapcom

It's no surprise that Capcom's support for Street Fighter V isn't over, but I am a bit shocked that its fourth season of new characters has already begun with new fighter Kage. Available now, this angry lad (his name literally translating to "Shadow") is pretty much a beefed up version of old palette-swap villain Evil Ryu. Now apparently cosplaying as a secondary character from Homestuck, or - more likely - some kind of Oni, Kage is a teleporting, air-dashing, punchier and generally meaner take on Ryu's familiar style. Give him a peek in the debut trailer and breakdown vid below.

"I've saved the city, saved the girl, but couldn't save... myself" - Cody Travers, mayor/prisoner

Rub some chalk on your bods, biffing fans. Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition has released its latest character, Cody, a street brawler who has gone from being a prisoner to a politician. Yeah, that old revolving door. Capcom have released a trailer for him, which briefly features a live action Cody that has 100% resemblance to the fighting game character and I won’t tolerate any of you saying otherwise.

It still feels a little weird to be writing about Street Fighter for a PC site (I still remember that DOS port of Street Fighter 2), but Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition has carved out a nice, stable niche within the PC multiplayer scene. This week, Capcom properly unveiled military martial artist Falke, the third of six DLC characters planned, and she's here to deliver some savage beatings with that staff of hers.

Blanka Slate: The fancy footwork finalehttps://www.rockpapershotgun.com/street-fighter-5-blanka-2Brendan CaldwellThu, 01 Mar 2018 20:00:33 +0000https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/street-fighter-5-blanka-2blanka slateStreet Fighter V: Arcade EditionCapcomFeature

Hi there, pain fans. This is Blanka Slate, a three-part series where I pick up in Street Fighter where I left off as a pre-teen – button-bashing as Blanka and getting summarily knocked out. This is the ultimate day of my journey into the shiny world of Street Fighter V. So far I have been roughed-up by Rashid and razzle-dazzled by Ryu. I've lost two out of three fights every day. But maybe my final foes will be so kind as to accept my raw, untrained strikes with an open mind, allowing me to break this streak. Or maybe they’ll just throw me into a sarcophagus and walk away laughing. Let’s find out.

The blizzards of Siberia have gone on holiday to the United Kingdom this week. But the RPS podcast, the Electronic Wireless Show, doesn’t do snow days. The pod squad have trekked hard through the whiteout (from their bedrooms to their computers) to gather on their respective microphones. To what end? Well, to talk about the weather. Blizzards, thunderclouds, sandstorms and, er, night-time? In videogames, it all counts.

Hello and welcome to Blanka Slate, a three-part series in which I pick up Street Fighter exactly where I left off decades ago – mashing buttons as Blanka and losing badly. But I am older, wiser and better at taking screenshots than all those years ago, so perhaps there is a chance for redemption. This is day two of my Street Fighter V journey, and I will be facing three more foes, including a character I neither know nor understand.

Hello. Today, I will return to the public biffing of Street Fighter after a long absence, with a single rule: I can only play as Blanka.

To explain: I haven’t played a game in this series since Street Fighter II, in which this Brazilian bootleg Hulk was a classic character. But he was only added to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition last week, where he is described by the game’s roster as “unemployed”. Join me in pretending that the release of this wildman is the reason I have decided to fight online in SFV, and not because I thought of the headline “Blanka Slate” first and then had to come up with a whole feature to justify using it.

It's better to be fashionably late than a total no-show. Blanka's absence from Street Fighter V at launch was a bitter pill to swallow, but everyone's favourite weird Brazillian jungle-monster-man is back today and on form.

Rejoining the likes of Ryu and Dhalsim and a few other frenemies from the good old days of Street Fighter 2, Blanka has picked up a few new tricks and some impressive costumes on the way, including one very, very silly one..

It’s the big mon himself. Blanka, the beast-like brawler who first appeared in Street Fighter II, is coming to Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition next week, on February 20. He’s still got them electrics, he’s still likes to roll around and savage his opponents with his claws, and he’s still upset at the world for accidentally leaving him in the Amazon jungle for most of his formative years. But maybe that’s all about to change in his upcoming story mode. “One day,” says a post from Capcom, “a suspicious salesman approaches him and offers a way to make Blanka famous by mass producing a doll made in Blanka’s likeness.” Wanna see Blanka dressed up as that doll? I have a picture right here.

Despite holding some of the first televised videogame battles back in the ‘80s, esports has been all but nonexistent in Japan. This is due to the cheerily named “Act Against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations,” a law which was chiefly aimed at curbing the growing Yakuza interests in video poker but which had the side effect of making it extremely difficult for players in the country to earn a living.

Now that’s all about to change thanks, in part, to the Olympic games. With talk of esports becoming an official Olympic event in 2024, an industry group under the name of JeSU announced plans to issue licenses exempting top esports players from the country’s gambling laws.

While Capcom are holding true to their promise that Street Fighter V would be the one and only version of SF5 you need to buy, they can't resist their old habit of slapping on modifiers to create increasingly ludicrous names. Next week Capcom will launch Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition, a big free update adding new modes to the fighting game as well as giving balance a kick up the bum. Ahead of the launch, they've whacked out the patch notes so fightfans can pop their monocles at number changes and frown at how vague some of the details are.
