There's more Darksiders on the way, but this one's looking a little smaller and cuter than the last. Darksiders Genesis is taking its sprawling world of comic-book gothic excess and cramming it into a cooperative hack n' slasher. Starring new horseman Strife (introduced in Darksiders 3) teaming up with his big-shoulder-padded buddy War; together they fight demon crimes. While some have likened it to Diablo 3, from the looks of the debut trailer below, I reckon this looks far more like the (underrated) Lara Croft And The Guardian Of Light. Give it a peek for yourself.
]]>If you believe (incorrectly) that there's no such thing as bad publicity, you may be impressed that people are still talking about publisher THQ Nordic GmbH. Their 'Ask Me Anything' Q&A session on 8chan - an infamous image-board permanently delisted from Google for hosting suspected child porn - got people chattering. Unfortunately it's the kind of chatter that has brought parent company THQ Nordic AB out of the woodwork to publicly apologise for the incident to "group employees, partners and consumers", although it's a predictably rote and half-hearted statement.
]]>"We're doing an 8chan AMA and we have no idea why," announced THQ Nordic on their Twitter account earlier this evening. If you're not aware, 8chan is an imageboard website which has been de-listed from Google search results for hosting "suspected child abuse content," and which is associated with Swatting and Gamergate.
THQ Nordic's marketing director has since apologised and claimed ignorance, but both are hard to believe.
]]>Darksiders 3 seems like a game with an identity crisis, but it latest patch looks to align the Souls-inspired sequel a bit more with its predecessor's less punishing combat. In its second major patch (noted here), Gunfire Games have added an optional "Classic" combat option, intended to feel a bit more like earlier Darksiders games. In this mode, players can now cancel out of attack animations by dodging and use items instantly. Outside of the new mode, Vulgrim now sells stat respecs, the level cap has been raised and they've added a few more checkpoints to the world.
]]>There are too many games. November is over, but it was a big month, and our giant collective digi-trough runneth over with shooters, stabbers and clickers. It’s repulsive and very wasteful, quite frankly. Thankfully, the RPS podcast (aka the Electronic Wireless Show) is here to snort up the good ‘uns and stamp all over the bad ‘uns. This week the pod squad are running through as many newly released games as they can, from Hitman 2 to Darksiders III to Just Cause 4 to… well, lots more.
]]>I never thought I'd see another Darksiders released after the implosion of THQ, but Darksiders 3 is out now and developed by Gunfire Games. The latest in the overblown post-apocalyptic action adventure series is apparently an odd beast. Folk can't seem to decide if it's rubbish or great, and our Alec Meer reckons in his review that it's both, thanks to its own confused identity. Sometimes it's a bit Diablo, other times it's all rather Dark Souls, and generally it sounds a bit too straight-laced for its own good, as hinted at by the serious (and potentially spoilery) launch trailer below.
]]>"Practice and penance!" snarls Susan Dark Souls, slamming a gnarled first into the table. Kevin Diablo rolls his bleary eyes and leans back in his chair. "Nah, man, just like, have a good time all the time." Susan and Kevin are both dear friends of mine, but boy, oh boy do they not get on.
Darksiders III often plays like a valiant attempt to create a truce between the two of them. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, and sometimes Ian Loredump shows up uninvited and ruins everything.
]]>Some time after Gunfire's apocalyptic hack n' slasher Darksiders 3 launches next month, whip-cracking heroine Fury gets to poke around some Serpent Holes. Nothing to do with Brendan's horny lizard-folk, but rather one of two planned bits of DLC for the game included in the Deluxe Edition's price.
The first DLC - The Crucible - has Fury return to the survival arena from Darksiders 2, while Keepers Of The Void re-purposes the Serpent Holes from the original Darksiders - formerly a fast-travel network, they're now full of puzzles, monsters and loot. Below, the latest trailer.
]]>As we stare into the weary, craggy face of the final quarter of 2018, there is still a glimmer of hope. The games are not yet done. They will never be done. And the impending release of them, some close, some a little further away, stirs something within us. The delicate, easily crushed butterfly of excitement. We may catch it yet, to keep in our collection of emotions - the sharp pin of time pushed through and through it into the cork of eventual disappointement.
]]>It's hard not to feel that publisher THQ Nordic and RPS share a mutual love of terrible puns. Case in point: Their sale this weekend on Steam, running from now until Monday, August 27th. While most of their catalogue is discounted, the best deals are to be found in remasters with terrible pun titles. Darksiders Warmastered Edition, Darksiders 2 Deathinitive Edition and the recent Red Faction Guerilla Re-Mars-tered (you may now groan) are all going cheap, plus a surprising deal on the pen-and-paper Shadowrun 5th Edition rulebook.
]]>With the collapse of THQ, it seemed impossible that Vigil's series of '90s comic-styled hack n' slash adventures would ever see another game, but here we are, with Darksiders 3 on the way, and due for release this November 27th. Published under the reborn THQ Nordic banner and developed by Gunfire Games (staffed in large part by ex-Vigil people), the third game puts players in the monster-stomping boots of Fury, who is a lady despite being one of the four horsemen of the apocalypse.
]]>As we lay 2017 to rest, let us remember all of the wonderful games that flickered across our screens and occupied our hearts and minds. But now we must promise never to think of them again because times have changed. This is 2018 and if we've learned one thing from the few hours we've spent in it it's that there are games everywhere. Every firework that exploded in the many midnights of New Year's celebrations was stuffed with games and they were still raining down across the world this morning. We cannot stop them, we cannot contain them, but we can attempt to understand them.
Hundreds of them will be worth our time and attention, but we've selected a few of the ones that excite us most as we prepare for another year of splendid PC gaming. There's something for everyone, from Aunt Maude, the military genius, to merry Ian Rogue, the man who hates permadeath and procedural generation with a passion.
]]>Darksiders 3 [official site] was only announced four days ago but we've already got 12 minutes of gameplay to inspect.
The pre-alpha footage shows Fury, one of the Horsemen (horsewoman?) of the Apocalypse, jumping and rolling through a city that's been torn apart by nature, fighting giant crabs, horned red monstrosities and – finally – Sloth, one of the Seven Deadly Sins. He's basically a massive, bulbous green bug with a club that looks like it could take your head off in a single swing.
]]>Update: Yup, it's now official. THQ Nordic have announced that Darksiders 3 is coming in 2018, made with the former Vigil Games folks at Gunfire Games.
It seems a Darksiders 3 [official site] will indeed rise from the ruins of THQ with more Apocalyptic action, as listings for it have unexpectedly popped up on Amazon. This time, Fury will be the Horseman riding out to duff up monsters. This is not officially official yet, mind, as Darksiders owner THQ Nordic haven't announced any such game. But the Amazon listing is right there and doesn't look like a prank. THQ Nordic have said for years that they wanted to make a third Darksiders, so here we go?
]]>Can even the Four Horsemen survive an apocalyptic event? Nordic Games hope so. When THQ went down in flames, Nordic bought up Darksiders - but not its creators, Vigil Games - and (naturally) declared that the hack 'n' slash action-RPG was not dead. While some assumed this would mean a Darksiders III, Nordic were a little vague, and the first we saw of DS again was the revamped Deathinitive Edition of Darksiders II - which hit PC last week. Worry not, they do indeed want to make a third game, and hope this re-release will help them with that.
