Castle Crashers was, like predecessor Alien Hominid, a beautifully animated, arcady, 2D scrolling beat ‘em up by The Behemoth. It eventually made it to PCs in 2012, although it was out on console in 2008. Curiously, however, I know for sure that I played it in 2007 - I guess it must have been a demo, or something. But good grief, what a vivid memory I have of playing it. Yep, that’s right - prepare for another wild swerve off the road of talking about the actual game, and into the rugged backcountry of soul-rummaging reflection.
]]>I'm not sure if Valve's latest promotional wotsit on Steam knows whether it's coming or going. On one hand, it's nice that the Spring Cleaning Event (running until Monday, 28th May) is nudging players into trying out games they may have bought in sales and never touched, but pairing that with nine simultaneous free weekend events does somewhat undermine the message.
Ah well, it's an excuse to play videogames all weekend. Can't grumble about that. Plus, there's an actual free game giveaway running - take a peek within. Oh, and yesterday's big Steam giveaway is still live until tomorrow, so try that too. Oh dear, there's just too many games.
]]>I associate Castle Crashers [official site] with an exciting time in video games. Downloadable games were really taking off, indie games were getting a whole lot more attention (and we all thought "indie" meant anything), and our very own RPS was re-founded. In all that, teeny team The Behemoth first released Castle Crashers, a pretty, silly, and fun hand-drawn beat 'em up (though it wouldn't come to PC for years).
I'm always happy to write about to write about Castle Crashers, then, and especially when it's good news like: a big free update has brought improved graphics, a new mode, and more.
]]>A fancied up version of pretty beat 'em up Castle Crashers [official site] is in the works, we've known for a while, but less clear was quite how it was coming to PC. Aye, Castle Crashers Remastered will obviously be a new standalone game on that new Xbag, but how will we lot on our Professional Cogitators receive the higher framerates and nicer textures and all that? Calm yourself, chum: it'll all simply be an update, the game's developers The Behemoth have announced. They explain:
]]>Castle Crashers [official site] is being remastered, despite only being released... oh, eight years ago? Yeah, fair enough then. I guess The Behemoth realised that they've not managed to outdo themselves in the years since, so may as well try and sell us the same game again. And we'll buy it, because Castle Crashers remains the best side scrolling co-op brawler since the days of the Mega Drive. Though, PC people will need to wait a little longer than our Xbox One counterparts.
]]>Developers The Behemoth are responsible for Alien Hominid, Castle Crashers and most recently BattleBlock Theater. Our Marsh Davies liked the latter when he leapt about its puzzley-platformy levels back in May. He was especially fond of its narrator, so "heroically entertaining it might singlehandedly save a much lesser game than this, interjecting with exclamations that are by turns snarky, sinister and silly."
That same voice returns in this short teaser for Behemoth's next game, currently only known as Game 4. It seems to be set in a world plunged into chaos by a giant bear colliding with Earth. Sweet!
]]>A month ago, The Behemoth announced that – after a mere four years – its co-op bashathon for the ages, Castle Crashers, would finally be getting a PC port. Naturally, I hurled an Xbox (not mine, mind you; that'd be wasteful!) out a window in glee, only to cease my celebratory smashing when I noticed a listed release date of “unknown.” Now, though, I can finally resume breaking things, because Castle Crashers has hit Steam.
]]>Last week, I got excited and gush-puked all over this very website because The Behemoth's Castle Crashers is finally crashing (in a good way, I mean) our most castle-like of platforms. And hey, it only took... four years to get here. For now, meanwhile, the paradoxically tiny developer's next project, a co-op/competitive platformer called BattleBlock Theater whose main character is named Hatty Hattington (sold!), is only slated for release on Xbox. However, The Behemoth has told RPS that - if all goes according to plan - things won't stay that way for too long.
]]>It has been a very good day for castles and PC gaming - although one could argue that it's pretty difficult to have a bad day when you're a giant stone triumph of human ingenuity (unless you're being besieged or demolished and replaced with a McDonald's). First, we received word that Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is in the process of whipping up a PC version, and now wickedly fun 2D smash-'em-up Castle Crashers is headed our way as well. For the uninitiated, it's madcap sidescrolling co-op with copious poop jokes that are somehow endearing. I don't fully understand why I love it, but I've learned not to question these things.
